It’s not a weird exception. Any student that has been enrolled at a school in excess of a calendar year, it completely eligible.
Does it matter what grade they started in?

I skeptical about this rule and how they enforce it. I know there are kids that live in outside of these zones and Jefferson Parish, St Benard, St Charles that go and play as Freshman at Lusher, Newman, DLS and Brother Martin.
They may fall under 465. 465 allows a student who matriculates from a traditional feeder school to be eligible immediately so long as the supervising authority signs off on it.
For instance a kid that matriculates from Christian Brothers to Brother Martin is eligible for a 465. The director of diocesan schools just has to sign off on it.

Okay. That makes a lot of sense.
I knew there was a loophole. Not necessarily a loophole but I knew there was something I was missing.

quote: Actually there are some restrictions on that .... some freshmen at catholic were not able to play freshmen ball Really? Is that a BR thing? Bc that link posted above says quote: Additionally, 9th grade and transfer students will be eligible to play junior varsity sports if they reside outside of the approved athletic attendance zone.
No not a BR thing - home attendance zone school issue

More like a Dutchtown spring practice thing

Double edged sword. If you are a coach and decline you are telling your players you don’t believe in them and have given up.
True but with the smaller schools, a lot of football players also play winter sports. Dragging out the football season when there’s no chance prevents these kids from moving on to their next sport

However, there is some weird exception for the catholic schools that have 8th grade. So if you live in Metairie and attend 8th grade as Jesuit, you can play in 9th grade, etc
quote:Exactly. This is one of the many reasons that Catholic schools have 8th grade. For the same reason a kid that has been at country day since 1st grade can play in 9th grade, a kid that moves to Jesuit or any other school in 8th grade is eligible to play in 9th grade. The eligibility question begins in 9th grade and it simply asks whether you are a new student. If you came in 8th grade, you are not a new student.

Those schools without a formal attendance zone - such as your private, charter and lab schools - are assigned one by the LHSAA. [quote][quote] they’re assigned the zone of the traditional public school whose zone they’re in But the schools under the purview of the OPSB don’t have zones, so by default they’re all of Orleans Parish
This is not completely accurate with respect to private schools. Pre-Katrina, private schools had specific resident districts that followed the public school in their district. However, since Katrina, the rule has simply been the parish that you live in. So, if you live in Orleans parish, you were eligible for any school in Orleans Parish. LHSAA said last year that they were going to reinstate districts for private schools, but they have yet to do so.

You’re wrong. The feeder school rule is not relevant here, because a kid going from Christian Brothers to Brother Martin would be transferring in 8th grade, and the question is whether they are new as a freshman. The only questions are, are they new in 9th grade, do they live in the parish, and, if they transferred from another school that has high school, did they play a varsity sport in 7th or 8th grade (that would also make them ineligible regardless of where they live). If you transfer to Newman as a 9th grader and you live in Jefferson Parish, you are ineligible for the year. There are no freshman from outside of Orleans parish that are new to the school and playing varsity, and there never have been. That is why Kai Donaldson is sitting out this year.

What about if you started school at Newman in Kindergarten?
That was what I was referring to

Then you are eligible in 9th grade to play varsity. It's the same as if you attend 7th or 8th grade at a school like Southern Lab or U-High

You are correct on both counts.
As far as Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the policy was changed a few years ago, all grammar schools dropped 8th grade. It was a losing battle for most schools in any case. A few had small 8th grades, but the kids were leaving in droves for the high schools for the last 20+ years and it kept increasing.
Interestingly enough my older son chose to stay through 8th grade at his grammar school, and my younger son and us, too, had enough after 6th and sent him to the same school for 7th, before they got rid of the 7th grade; so he could go to the high school with his brother for 2 years.
Younger son played lacrosse, but didn't start until 9th grade.
