We could give him the transition tag and the trade would be a first, not a second.

The transition tag only gives you the right to match an offer. If you do not match the offer there is no compensation.

A non exclusive transition tag allows Teddy to negotiate and get the saints 2 first round compensatory picks.

The rule as presented on Wikipedia:

quote:

A "non-exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five cap hits at the player's position for the previous five years applied to the current salary cap, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if the player signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

Doubt the Saints do anything like this unless Teddy is on board and they are willing to take the hit if no one is willing to negotiate at those rates for Teddy.

Ok but why wouldn't you want to get picks and send him to a destination he prefers? It's a win-win.

Did you know that other players will see this. It's public. Treat FA's like sh!t and that is the kind your team would get.

Meh. I think some would respect doing what’s right and fair for your franchises success.

Part of investing in a reclamation project is capturing the value in their success. Cause you surely risk the money and picks in the failure. Teddy knew in his best case scenario the saints had an option on his rights. Nothing shameful in that.

That said, it may not be a slam dunk to get a top pick and see him get paid. The move does come with some risk if he signs a tag and the trades just don’t work out easy

He’s not turning down a likely 20+M/year to “wait it out” for Brees

Theres no reason we cant give him a back loaded contract for 20+ per year if we have a strong inkling next year is Drew's last

How much of that backloaded deal are you guaranteeing?

You know, since the guy may be worried about something like a career ending injury at practice.

Teddy probably played too well for him to come back to the Saints.

At some point, in order to close out Drew's cap hits, and pay our other players, we are going to need to get a QB on a rookie contract.

don't think its far fetched Teddy waits out Brees as long as he knows its sooner rather than later.

Cant afford him next year.

Teddy deserves more then that. He kept this team in the hunt, let him earn what’s due..... as long as its not in the NFC South :-)
