Who is the worst coach to win a CBK national title?

#1 for me is pretty obvious. Tubby Smith.
Tubby was 46-62 in the Big 10 at Minnesota and 18-36 in the Big 12 at Texas Tech. His NC was his only Final 4 appearance. Granted that nobody here seems to realize that. And of course his title was with Petino’s players.
#2 for me is Jim Valvano. No matter how much that suggestion will get me killed. He was 71-69 in the ACC at NCSU, and even in his NC year he lost 10 games. (There’s a reason they were such huge underdogs to Houston.)

Tubby was a good coach just a bad recruiter.

HORRIBLE.
Tubby lost a recruiting battle to DII Ouachita Baptist while he was here.

A lot of his contemporaries thought Valvano was the best game coach in the business.

That year their best player missed half the season with an injury. He returned just before the ACC tournament.

Tubby had losing conference records at both Texas Tech and Minnesota. At Texas Tech he was exactly .333 in Big 12 play. He got fired at Memphis after just 2 years. Now Tubby’s the coach at High Pointe, which I had never heard of until I looked at Tubby’s wiki article earlier today.
Doesn’t sound like a good coach to me.

If you recruit shite players then it doesn’t matter how good you are at X and O’s. There comes a level when you just can’t overcome the talent deficiency.

they're all about the same. All overrated. It's all about having the best players.

Heathcoat has to be up there with Ollie
Ray Meyer May be the worst Post season coach ever also

That’s only because he kept getting new jobs, despite not being very good. He led Minnesota to 2 NCAAs in 6 years and Texas Tech to 1 NCAA in 3 years. Not a very good ratio.

I might catch some heat for this but Cal has to be in the conversation. Has anyone ever done less with more than him?

Calipari? Is that some kind of joke?
He’s gone to 4 Final Fours with 3 different teams.
Anybody who would argue Smith is a better coach than Calipari is a clown. I know that NCAA issues have plagued Calipari, but still.

Busted for cheating and fired 1 year after his NC.
