Why would he “dump” salt on a food plot?
Is he talking about in one spot, like for a salt lick?

You just have misunderstood

Back in the day, when people went to war the winners would pour salt over the losers crops so nothing would grow

Salt will kill your food plots

He like would dump the salt in a pile and use this instead of a salt block

Yeah that’s fine. Nothing will ever grow where that pile is but the deer will tear up the ground for many years

You can buy cattle salt from a feed store also. Yes the special ‘deer’ salt is way overpriced and sold to hunters, any cheap salt will work.

1 part Di-calcium phosphate, you can get it at a feed store for $10-12 per 50lb sack. Get 1

2 parts Trace mineral salt. It’s about $5-10lbs per 50lb sack. Get 2

I mix those together and use them on many mineral sites. The deer absolutely hammer it.

The di-cal and mineral salt mix posted above is the best mix I've used. The di-cal that I've used in the past has molasses in it. Deer wear it out.

No reason it wouldn't work but salt rocks or other forms of salt work also. Doesn't really matter what kind it is and also don't expect much activity on it this time of year.

Water softening salt on a rotten stump or a pile of old wood that’s starting to rot. Feel like he left this out the story haha.

Make your own minerals for about $22. Mix these two below, and you have 100 lbs. Enough to make 2-3 salt/mineral licks for deer.

You can use cattle salt from a feed store in a swimming pool as well.

I just buy the 50lb mineral salt blocks from the feed store for like $7 and it them with a hammer a few times. Or I used to before I stopped because of CWD being close.

My father in law dumps the salt from his pool at the edge of the woods behind his house as a salt lick so he can watch them out the window.
