Zion's Strength/Stability and cause of injury

Lets start here. Zion is a 19 year old boy. Yes, he is built like a truck, he is supremely athletic, and he is a man on the court with the blend of size, speed, agility, and power/explosiveness. Despite all of that, his body is very underdeveloped regarding the basics.
As a physical therapist, we evaluate individuals as a whole. We don't see a knee injury and simply look at the knee. There is a kinetic chain from the core down to the ankles that can create a weak link and put a person at risk for injury at the site of weakness or elsewhere.
In Zions case, he has had knee issues both left and right over the last 8 months. That's not a coincidence. I bet if you tested the strength of his Quadriceps and Hamstrings, they are probably strong as an Oxe. So if the Quadriceps and Hamstrings are strong and his athleticism is supreme, then why recurrent injuries at the knee. And yes, I realize he busted a shoe that led to his first knee injury. But once an injury occurs everything around it can be magnified if not corrected.
I watched him the other night warming up with one of the trainers and it was very apparent he lacks hip strength, stability, and has core weakness that is contributing to increased stresses at the knee. (lets not even talk about the 285 lb frame) He couldn't perform simple movement patterns focusing on those things and motor control. He could jump out of the gym, but couldn't perform the simplest of exercises without losing his balance and falling that the trainers demonstrated very simply.
With all that being said, I truly believe that Zions minutes and games should be limited this year. I want to see him play 48 minutes just like the rest of us, but it won't be good for him long term. He needs an entire offseason under his belt with Aaron Nelson or whoever he chooses in order to build basic hip/core strength, LE stability, and improve his motor control to be more efficient and have better mechanics to reduce injury going forward. Lastly, he probably needs to lose about 20lbs, which most of us know has been discussed at nauseam.

While you may or may not know as much as you think you know (I tend to think you are legit with reasonable conclusions), as long as this type isnt being presented as insider information, I find it to be interesting as a topic on this board. Thanks for sharing

That all makes sense for a guy like Zion.

I like this kinda insight. I bet what coach K said about him not being in good enough shape for summer league still rings true to a degree. Kid went from Duke to the circus of endorsements the draft and all kinds off non basketball stuff

Seems pretty reasonable. The kid probably hasn’t had legit trainers in his entire career. Hell two years ago he was working out in a high school weight room. I’m sure he was in a good weight/conditioning program at Duke, but he wasn’t there long. Hopefully the Pelicans staff realizes this and gets him headed in the right direction.

if zion and his team dont listen to you it could be disastrous.
This is a hard pill to swallow.

Yep, I’m a doctor of physical therapy. I’m sorry if posting my professional opinion bothers you. Better than joe blow making up shite and having a theory at 2am in the morning high or drunk. Lol

I don’t think he meant that they have to read my post and listen. I just think the agrees with my sentiment that it will take time and hopes they feel the same. By all accounts so far, they are taking extra precautions with him which is great to see as this season doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things

TLDR version: He needs to get down to about 255. Which is not easy considering he probably has a relatively low body fat percentage.

I agree. Playing a lot during the season will cause some natural weight loss. It’s the off-season weight loss that will be important. If he loses weight, he will become more explosive which is scary

He’s definitely quad dominant. Hips and glutes need to be worked big time.
EDIT: I speak as a guy with 20+ years of knee issues because I’m quad dominant. PT has done wonders for me, and the focus has been hips, glutes, and hamstrings and it made all of the difference in the world.

We have, arguably, the best trainer on staff now. I trust this FO compared to previous FO's.

I'm not sure he has low body fat

So basically another project in the making that will constantly be injured without some serious physical changes??
