My best guess is that Obama is being careful not to tarnish his legacy by backing a loser. I am not necessarily saying Biden will lose, but if Obama backs Biden and he then loses, it will reflect poorly on him, much as it did when Hillary Clinton was defeated by Donald Trump. If you think of it in these terms, it makes perfect sense for Obama not to endorse any candidate at this time.

I think that's fair. I wouldn't be surprised if Obama had a preference for another nominee, but I don't think you can read that simply from his staying out of the campaign.
