Looking at a house that has a sloped back yard. I'd like to level off a portion and put in a retention wall. The wall would need to be 30-40 feet wide and would need to level out about a thousand square foot patch. I'd describe it as a gentle slope, not a drop off. I'd estimate the wall would be 6-7 feet.

Is this enough info to get a ballpark on price? Anyone done a project like this before? Things to look out for? TIA

Bookmarked.

My backyard drops fairly steeply and I worry about the land ‘sagging’ and affecting the house. House has been here 50 years though so may be worried for nothing.

Pinnacle Exterior Construction quoted me 20K for roughly 140 linear feet and height of wall varies from 3-5’. They use wood instead of retaining wall block, so I couldn’t justify that much for something that one day would need repair.

Mud Bug Pavers out of Hammond isn’t the cheapest but the wall they build isn’t going anywhere. Price depends on which style of block you use l, but quality of work and customer service is great.

Retaining walls ain't cheap and if you need a reinforced concrete footing then the price obviously goes up. I don't know prices or soil conditions where you live but when you get a quote, also get an alternate with 2 terraced walls about 3-4' apart and each about 3 to 3'-5' tall. When you get over 4' tall the structural elements become way more expensive.

Does not make sense with this

You need a 6-7 ft high wall? That’s a huge retaining wall?

Also, 30-40 ft is 10 yards? That’s all you need? That’s a small yard?

Long and narrow. Lot is 90 feet wide. I'd say it's gentle slope, but there will be a lot of fill dirt necessary to get it level. I'm still probably butchering this explanation.

As mentioned above, you will probably be better off with 2 smaller ones. So off your back door you step down say 2-3 ft to the yard instead of into the yard. Then you have a yard. Then another 2-3 ft retention yard. So you have 2 walls 3 ft high each instead of one big dog. Then they can level the dirt in between them.

You're gonna need either a wall with a footing OR a wall with tie-backs into the fill side.

Some good information there. They even have an app you can play with.

Find out your local code in my dang city anything over 4-5 feet can’t remember they want engineered stamped drawings of the wall, but if you can get away with it avoid permitting that thing
