This is a long listen, but it is VERY interesting. I would be interested to hear what the board thinks and if anything can be done.

Together BR video, brainwashing liberal propaganda. Education is the key to raise people out of poverty, not handouts or midnight basketball. But here is the hook: people have to WANT a good education and value it.

Stop rewarding people who make poor decisions over and over. Hold people responsible for the poor decisions they make.

Yes, but education is not like a shot of antibiotics that someone else administers and it works while you do other things.

Education needs students to work hard and meet the educators halfway.

Poor people are poor because of the choices they make.

This is probably the most ignored aspect of any discussion about poverty.

Having children out of wedlock is the #1 cause of poverty.

I guess for me the shocking thing was the comparison of all the states and the amount of tax exemptions given at the state level for local taxes.
I am wondering if the board sees an issue with Louisiana being the only state that has this kind of state level board.
For the record, I agree with you about education being a key to personal advancement.

And enabling those choices keeps the cycle going for generations.

The premise of local property taxation does not fit with the long-standing Republican Party doctrine of corporate taxation:

Companies don’t pay taxes. People do. When you increase taxes on corporations, they simply pass the cost on to consumers. Thus corporate taxation is an overall negative.

When companies are allowed to maximize profits, those profits will make their way back into the economy with wages and spent dividends.

If you tax corporations, they will not invest in your local facilities, and jobs will be lost. Your community will become poorer.

This is GOP truth. Do not try to challenge it.

It is much better for the government to take the money that would be invested back into the economy and distribute it amongst those who haven't earned it. Fact.

1000% agreed. Education and upward mobility is very generational

I’d argue that poor people are poor because of the choices they fail to make. Very few people who are raised without a value for education will independently make the choice to seek it, even given the obvious benefits.

We see this at all levels. Relatively few people who were not born to business owners/entrepreneurs tend to start companies. Mostly, people tend to stay in the same economic group they were born into. We humans tend to do what we are shown.

In this country, this is simply not true at all - at least historically speaking.

Funny. It used to not be that way in 70805 (traditional North Baton Rouge) until the 1980's. I wonder what happened?

Well that goes without saying.

But what if they DO earn it? What if that money is spent on pouring concrete for a loop around BR? Would that money be better for LA than the trickle-down from Exxon shareholder’s increased spending?

Is there a level of taxation that is fair to compensate EBR for the consequences of hosting a refinery?

because they make other choices for their time/resources. it's still the choices they make

and concepts like privilege ensure it stays that way

In 1940, there was less than 18% chance that a bottom “50%-er” would become a “top-25%-er”. It was steadily declined over the past 80 years.

do you think that all the people who are employed by Exxon don't ultimately pay taxes to EBR?

look at the Rust Belt to see what happens to tax policy when industries leave

I wouldn't say cause. There is definitely a strong correlation but I don't think that is the number 1 cause. Not finishing high school is probably the number 1 cause
