Down and distance has almost become irrelevant

I was very cognizant of the down and distance while watching LSU offense is over the past decade.
Every first down I would say “God please let us get 5 yards on this play, so we can set our self up in position to gain another 3 yards on second down and have a makeable third down conversion.”
Just year after year of watching LSU grind out first downs so slowly and just hoping that we could string enough together to get in position to at least kick a field goal. It was painful.
This year, I hardly ever notice what the down is and the distance is almost irrelevant. Every three downs is like three pitches with a chance for us to hit a homerun. And we almost always hit a homerun on one of those downs.
In past years, if we had lost 2 yards on first down the we might as well have punted the ball. Now “who cares?” Joe will just hit one of our big play receivers for a 20 yard game.
Every time we get the ball I am positive that we are going to score. And on the off occasion that one of Burrow’s passes lands on the ground, it feels strange. On the few occasions that we actually punt, I am shocked.

Agreed.
My takeaway last night was that this team is plenty good enough to beat anyone in the country. The defense can get enough stops and the offense can't be stopped.

Totally agree. Very bizarre feeling. Have been a fan since 2006 when I transferred to LSU as a sophomore, and I know the exact feeling you’re talking about. And now...I just know we’ll torch them. It’s awesome.

It’s just like watching the Saints with Brees.

Hell, we might as use the strategy of the high school from Arkansas that goes for it on every fourth down and never punts.
Can you imagine the pressure that would put on a defense.

I’m still in shock kinda. I still can’t believe I’m watching LSU’s offense lighting mf’ers up every week.

At a point in the third or 4th quarter we converted our fitst 3rd down of the game. We were 0/2 perviously.

11 yards per play is ridonculous.

Agreed.
When we were going for it on 4th and 3 and got a penalty, then decided to punt...I was saying go for it anyway. What’s the difference.

I was thinking the same thing when I made it to work today except it wasn’t about first downs it was about scoring TOuchdowns. Obviously the championship teams but maybe like two other seasons if we ever fell behind I would not be worried bc I felt like we could score on any drive. Now this year my friend, we could spot people 14 before the game starts and I wouldn’t sweat it very hard. Burrow’s decision making and accuracy of his throws are refreshing.

Yes. On offense and defense, down and distance doesn't seem to matter.

And they onside kick every time!

2019: Only 15 punts in 6 games. 2.5 punts per game.
2018: 67 punts in 13 games or 5.1 per game.
Another amazing stat is 42 touchdowns and 7 FGs in 6 games.
2018 was 49 touchdowns and 29 FGs in 13 games.

I seriously think the overreaction of fans about defensive play is due to the past experience with LSU. It’s a physical response. Our brains are so wired to be stressed about offense that our body is having the same physical response during games.

They played very clean, too. It felt like the officials wanted to gin up a few bogus penalties to prevent a blowout.
