How Carcinogens Infiltrated the Generic Drug Supply

This Bloomberg article explains the increased generic medication recalls and shortages.
The United States should not count on China and India to make our pharmaceuticals. Bring these factories back to the United States where they will be more accountable for quality.

How carcinogens infiltrated the American drug supply
quote:
At least 80% of the active pharmaceutical ingredients, or APIs, for all drugs are made in Chinese and Indian factories that U.S. pharmaceutical companies never have to identify to patients, using raw materials whose sources the pharmaceutical companies don’t know much about. The FDA checks less than 1% of drugs for impurities or potency before letting them into the country.

Money. Money is the root of all shite.

True. The process that used a solvent that created this carcinogenic by-product was cheaper. And China has zero accountability.

So what you're saying is these carcinogens are kinda like the lagniappe of our generic pharmaceuticals.

I think “lagniappe” has a different connotation than “rare cancer.”

If you really want to learn more, read the book Bottle of Lies. It’s about the generic drug market and how the FDA can’t really inspect the facilities in India and China and how they’ve been proven to cheat the system and deliver subpar drugs. It’s really eye opening.
It’s also a major reason we’re creating antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria and viruses. It’s especially worrisome when you figure that out entire healthcare system is based of the production of cheap generic drugs.
Compare the price of brand name and generic drugs and it’s astounding the difference in price. I tested this not too long ago and WITH insurance my prescription was $340 name brand, less than $5 generic.

I am reading that book now,it’s scary. It infuriates me that drug company executives are so greedy and that our country lets this situation continue.I believe in capitalism but this is too much. What I don’t understand is how drug company executives have so little concern for not only their fellow citizens but for their own family and friends.Surely, their relatives and friends get sick and take medications. It seems they would want them to have safe, effective medications.

Americans pay the most for medication. How and why are Chinese manufacturers controlling global provision of drug ingredients?

Given the growing trade war and animosity between the two countries, the utter dependence on China for the U.S.'s basic medicines also poses a national security threat. China's drug manufacturing dominance gives it a nuclear option in the ongoing trade war. Millions of Americans could die without access to lifesaving medications if China decides to weaponize its drug-making.

I would not use any medicine that was made in either India or China.
I'm in good health and rarely take any medicine.
Herbs are the way to go for basic health.
80% is a very scary number.

I guess you would if you didn't know. I take two generic prescription drugs, and I have no idea where they're manufactured.

Profit margins on generics are low, particularly the ones on $4 lists
Thus the get made in shithole countries and QC goes to poop

If you read the article, most American manufacturers buy bulk ingredients from China so the bottle labeled “Manufactured in New Jersey” is misleading.
Unless you are growing your own herbs, they likely come from China too.

They cross the Rubicon on that and there is no going back.

I do grow some herbs. I have no issue with Chinese medicinal herbs as long as I can vet them out.

But remember Marijuana is was grown on a farm in hell by its owner Satan by a bunch of demons.
So this is a lesser of two evils.

That’s neat but I think you are missing the point.

We are over medicated. Even our pets are over medicated. Those yearly boosters are a farce, just for money.
How come people get vaccine that gives lifetime protection, yet pets who have much shorter lifespan, need an annual booster?

I'm not missing the point at all. China is sketchy. I try not to buy anything made in China, which is difficult. I'm generally successful except for a few food and herb items that only come from China.

One reason I stopped taking Zantac products.
