curious for the guys who have been to colorado during rifle season...did you see alot of cows while looking for bulls? WE've had success in montana for 3 years hunting mule deer. This is our first elk trip. there is 3 of us. We plan to buy 1 bull and 2 cow tags for our unit. We're looking for the experience and the meat. Horns are a bonus. Seeing that at one point there were 900 cow tags on the leftover list, it makes me think there are an abundance of them out there. thanks ahead of time

Give us a run down when you get back please!
I'll hunt through you!

any insight on the cow status? will they be running around like rabbits?

Never hunted CO, but last year in MT similar time frame...
We had good snow on the ground and good snow falling during the week. Elk were herded in large groups at low elevations feeding in hay fields and such at night, during the day they'd move to benches overlooking the private probably 250-500 up slope right on edge of private/public boundary.
A lot of guys trying to catch them slipping, but they seem to know where that damn invisible line is.

I agree with Dirty Mike, they will likely be very congregated in lower elevations where they can find food.
Lots of time they will be close to private land so if you can find a place where they're transitioning from private to public and back you should have success

thats our plan. Watched some randy newberg videos describing the same tactics.

whats considered low elevation in co? In MT last year, the same time, we hunted 3-4k the whole time and elk were around but we strictly focused on the deer.

Good luck everyone. These next 16 days are going to be agonizing until I head to Wyoming Unit 60.

Do it dude.
We were saying the same thing last year and just decided frick it, we're not saying this anymore. Put in for tags, bought some mil surplus shite, and we're going try. Worst case we are out a few days of vacation and a grand or so. Best case we have the trip of a lifetime.
As far as just getting a tag and making the trip, ain't nothing to it.

the Gunnison area
Hunted there for several years. The problem we've run into in the specific area we hunt is the private land below us run cows on the public land. The cowboys are constantly running the "cows" down the mountain. That also pushes the Elk down to the ranch too. Very frustrating to spend the time and money and stuff like this happens.
Lots of cows though, typically with rag horn Bulls in tow.

Hunted gunnison for the first 2 weeks of archerY. They had a seismograph crew in the area until opening day.. I shot a cow and saw 1 6x6 .. out of the 10 camps I didnt see anything else brought off the mountain.. rifle season should be easy. Snow pushes them down to the private land . Hunt the edges of private . Rifle hunting elk is like shooting fish in a barrel..
