Pass Rush

Year after to year our defense has always been top notch under Aranda. Im nitpicking but I feel like it has been awhile since we have had a dominant pass rush. Its honestly the only thing I'm worried about holding our defense back this year. Chaisson has to have a big year and we have to pressure quarterbacks without blitzing. If we can find a consistent pass rush, offenses will struggle severely with our DBs and LSU will become a legit contender this year if we arent already.

you must be thinking about before aranda. we have never had a dominant pass rush under aranda. he's an unbelievable dc but, it's more strategic than bull rush for sure.

He rarely rushed more than 4 against Texas but when he did there was always results. At least that’s what I think

I may be in the minority here but I felt like the pass rush was pretty solid once we stopped that cage rush bullshite. The problem was:
1) Ehlinger is a good QB
2) We were gassed by that 19 play drive.
look we finished the game with 5 sacks and pressured him on many other plays, the son of gun just kept making plays.

The DL said the plan was a "cage rush" to keep Ehlinger inside a pocket.
Now, we can argue the call itself. But, for much of the game, it was a choice to not rush aggressively and with abandon.

we have not had the players nor the depth on the defensive line while aranda has been here. I know the staff is trying to recruit, and we have had some success.
bringing in some baws this year. hopefully jacobian jumps in the class.

We blitzed on 4th & 2 and they scored.
We blitzed on 2nd & 24 and ehlinger scrambled for 15 yards.
Almost all of their big plays came when we blitzed.

Being creative with the pass rush would help. When we stunted and disgusted certain preassures we got to him. I am assuming we didnt stunt much using four man pressures to contain him in the pocket. it didnt work though.

Teams want to get pressure with 4.The fact that LSU cannot is a huge problem.

if the texas game is part of your concern, it shouldnt be. we specific chose not to rush the QB

Great pass blocking (holding) by the Texas offensive line, also. But we will need a better rush to win the SEC.

Thats what I'm saying. Every other dominant program gets pressure with their front 4. It seems we never can unless we bring other people.

I was disappointed that we did not blitz enough on 3rd and long and allowed the Texas QB stand in the pocket and pick us apart! When Bama's defense has a 3rd and long situation, they send the house on a blitz. We need to get aggressive like that. We allowed to many 3rd and long completions.

We've never had a good pr with Aranda. I think that we were around the bottom of the sec in sacks last season. We have to recruit better at that position and bring them along from a pure strength standpoint. Going back a few years we haven't been able to shed blocks or bull rush effectively. Just look at the NFL draft picks over the last few years.

Which is how we've historically done very well against QBs that were better runners than passers. We ate Johnny Manziel alive by making him throw from the pocket.
Ehlinger was just a better passer than we expected and our linebackers really missed some coverage assignments on Duvernay in the middle.

I feel like the sack stat should be sacks/holds against.

If any of you actually wanted to find the answers to your questions, why don’t you do a little homework and listen to player interviews and press conferences. All of those answers are there. I’ve posted all of this information as well. The players and Coach O said over and over that the game plan vs Sam was to employ a “cage rush” where the middle bull rushes, ends bull rush yet maintain outside leverage to collapse the pocket. This is the Bill Belichick philosophy that they don’t go for the sack, but make the QB throw under pressure.
O said they were more concerned with Sam beating them with his feet. They forced him to throw. O also said if they had to do it all over again, they would actually pressure him all game long instead of cage rush him. So game 2 with actually not having the defense go all out with pressure, Fulton getting hurt early on and playing at 75%, dehydration issues and a multitude of other injuries the second half are not indicative of the level of defense this team will play going forward.

The gameplan was contain, not blitz.

Aranda is a little too sophisticated to just send the house. He's an expert is masking schemes to try and put the defense in a situation to get a turnover. If we bull rush the QB, they will get it out quickly and I'm not totally confident our CBs will be able to react quick enough. We thrive on defending the long ball.
