A debate came up in my workplace while discussing hosting a video game tournament. Someone asked about the prize money, and legalities. It was said that it's not gambling so it would be no different from a bowling or darts tournament. We would just accept money to enter and use that as the prize pool. We got into an argument because some people think a video game tournament is akin to a poker tournament in regards to luck and skill. Others say the gaming tournaments are more skill based while poker has a heavier influence from luck making it considered gambling. Are these two things even remotely comparable? We bout to fight in here.

Gaming is completely based on skill unless you're playing a battle royale game, which is still skill based with a little luck of finding a great weapon.

The complainers probably just suck at gaming.

There's no arguing that gaming and poker are both skill based but they are vastly different. Anybody can win a few hands of poker against the best players in the world. Poker is a game of making correct decisions consistently over a long period of time. Winning poker players can have periods of breaking even or losing just due to variance. If we are talking about FPS games, then the better player will win almost always. I'm not sure how someone can make the comparison. You could sit down and take a couple pots from someone in poker heads up but it doesn't prove anything but it's safe to say who the better FPS player is in a much smaller sample size.

No comparison in my view. Gaming is a display of skill. The skill of poker lies in reading people, reading the cards, and knowing when to play and what to bet. Even knowing all of that, you can still lose.

A poker player that is better than everyone else in a tournament still isn't a safe bet to win it. A gamer who is better than everyone else in a tournament will only lose if he screws up or someone else has a banner day.

Competitive BRs certainly have a large aspect of luck. Loot, circle placement, shield, etc.

The fact that fortnite has such a large comp scene is crazy to me since that game has bloom.

Depends on what game. Games like Madden and 2k have RNG. You hit stick someone in Madden you have a percentage of them fumbling and even then your opponent could be lucky enough to have a computer controlled player recover the ball.

I've seen a ton of good shots miss while terrible ones go in playing 2k.
