Archer was worse than Hallman, if only because he was handed a Ferrari and turned it into an Edsel within 3 years.

I always find that analogy silly. Archer also had a 10-1-1 season and LSUs only top 5 finish between 1961 and 2003. As others mentioned he was not a good recruiter but recruiting was starting to slide under Arnsparger. Also in Archers defense somewhat, the NCAA instituted new eligibility requirements prop 48 I think it was called and a lot of in state kids were ineligible. Hallman was a better recruiter but an awful coach. If you could combine the 2 he might not have been so awful

Archer is still coaching at a reasonably high level 30 years later. Curly never sniffed making the jump to pro ball, fell out of college ball (at every level) and finally flamed out as a High School coach. The fact that anyone would make him the head coach at a university (at any level), let alone at a major football school, is, in hindsight, laughable.

In some alternate universe somewhere Archer might have been able to right the ship and make his tenure successful. No universe exists where Curly could have done the same thing.

If you want to put Joe Dean above Curly as the worst thing to happen to LSU you would have a pretty decent argument; but not Archer.
