Maternity leave question

My wife is a speech therapist, the hr department at her work, which is a complete shite show, just sent her an email and asked her how she was going to pay for her benefits while she was out. This seems like bullshite to me, they should pay for that correct? She is not an independent contractor. Also, for her last pregnancy, this was never brought up. I am thinking this hr person has no clue what they are doing.

Chances are the answer to this question is inside her employee handbook.

I wouldn't stress it. Have your wife reply back and say I will be contacting the labor board.
FMLA?
FMLA?

Is she hourly? What's the company maternity leave and benefits policy?
Yes, you should try to work for a company that provides the benefits you want. No, they shouldn't automatically have to pay for things like this if their policy is not to do so.

Have her put in for FMLA and use whatever leave she has available.

Generally, you have to pay for your health insurance premiums out of pocket when you're out on leave.

How long is she planning to be out? I think the family leave act allows up to 12 weeks of job protection and mandates that the group benefit medical benefits be maintained by the employer. I don't believe any other benefits are covered though.

If she is taking unpaid leave, and her premiums are taken out of her paycheck, they need to know how she is paying the premiums.

12 weeks
That should be covered but when you, or they, say "benefits" it could include more than just medical insurance. Maybe like vision or dental is not covered. Maybe she has other benefits than require a contribution that you will need to cover.

So we have to pay out of pocket? Just trying to clarify, again same thing 2 years ago, we didn't have to do this.

Sure, but if her premiums are typically deducted out of her paycheck, she will have to find some other way to pay that premium since she won't be receiving a paycheck while on leave.

She has to pay for her portion. It’s not paid maternity leave.

She took unpaid leave two years ago? And had insurance or other benefit premiums she was responsible for paying?

My wife used the minimum PTO that would cover her benefits when she was out.

Well yea, assuming she has premiums, which she's been paying out of pocket through her paycheck.

Specifics of your situation can only be answered by the employer.
