What is a reasonable installation charge and monthly cost (with contract) to expect to pay.
What types of security good to have?
We've been quoted for about $4k for all windows and doors opening sensors , glass breakage monitoring, one motion detector, one video, smoke detectors in all the rooms, and maybe some other stuff.

Simplisafe is a lot better option.

Go with Ring or something similar. You’ll save thousands and you can put some of those savings to covering your house in cameras.

ADT installs for free, or at least they did my place in the middle of nowhere and maybe it's the long term ties (going on 25 years now) that they offered Mom free install on her new house including windows doors and motion sensor.
Reality is you don't need window detection if you have a central hallway like most houses. Just a single motion detector will trigger if a burglar enters that hall as they would moving room to room looking for stuff. It's not like Joe the cop standing in line at Dunkin Donuts or running DWI patrol is gonna come rushing to a burglar call. All the cops do for burglaries is write a report for homeowners to include with their insurance claim. When you need help NOW cops are only minutes away! Burglars will simply knock the annoying speaker off the wall to silence it and take what they can grab in 15 minutes or less and walk away long before a cop arrives.

Might also want to cross post to the tech board. It is possible they give you better options.

When we bought our house it was wired for window and door sensors. They hooked everything up and installed 3 or 4 motion sensors and 3 glass break sensors.
They did not charge for it. Just wanted the contract.
That being said, we cancelled the service about 6yrs later. Getting ready to install ring door bell cameras.

We had ADT in our old house, but I switched us to Simplisafe when we moved. I installed everything myself in less than twenty minutes. We purchased additional window sensors because the base package didn't cover all of the ones we wanted. Our monthly bill is cheaper, which is nice. We live in a rural area; nevertheless, the two times we've had false alarms, the cops were there within minutes.

Boy ain't that the truth. My mom saw someone breaking into my aunt's garage down the road. She called the cops and they got there about 20 min later, the guy was still in the building. The cop is just standing by the door and the guy busts out and the cop doesnt even chase him. Just lets him run off.

Wife jumped on "offer". Now has serious regrets. Trying to cancel contract. Has three days to do so.

Ring. Even if you get crazy with the amount of sensors and detectors, it's still the MUCH cheaper alternative to any ADT types.
I'm paying $100/year for the same monitoring that they offer.
Installation is easy and the app is awesome.
I even went with the smoke/CO detectors that also are monitored. Those were expensive, but with a couple small children, well worth the cost IMO.

with adt and vivint,,, they are the only companies that can monitor their equipment... the rest you can shop yearly monitoring contracts .

If I remeber right, about $30/ piece.
This is what the app shows. The CO and Smoke Alarm are seperate for each location, but are one device.
edited for names.

Following up.
We were able to cancel the absurd ADT contract of nearly $4000 in stuff and a $60/mo monitoring fee and I decided on a Frontpoint system. Seems like Consumer Reports is OK with it along with a number of "reviews" online, (which I assume are produced by Frontpoint, or someone paid by them) Anyway, got basically the same stuff (give or take a few items) for only $600 / $50/mo monitoring.
Big difference. I will have to install it myself. I realize that some have lower monitoring fees, but I think this one will be what we're looking for.
Thanks for each's input in this thread.
