Good cowboy baked beans recipe

Someone called it that and they had ground meat, onions and bacon in it. I was just wondering do you cook said meat and combine all together then bake. I wanted to precook Friday and have for Saturday

I usually brown a pound of breakfast sausage, drainthe excess fat,and addthat to my beans.

Here’s what I do.
Baked Beans
Ingredients
1 lb bacon, fine diced
1 lb hot breakfast sausage
2 medium onions, fine diced
2 jalapeño peppers, minced, seeds removed
4 cloves garlic, minced
4 cans(15 oz)Van Camps beans, with liquid
1 can black beans, with liquid
1 bunch green onions, minced
4 T parsley, minced
1 t each, onion and garlic powder
2 bay leaves
1/2 T dry mustard
2 T Worcestershire sauce
1T Tony’s
1 t black pepper
1 cup BBQ sauce (used KC Masterpiece)
1.5 to 2 cups Norris Best syrup (use a dark syrup)
Method
Brown the bacon, sausage, and onions in an oven proof pot. Use medium heat and cook until the onions are beginning to get a good color. Add the garlic during the last minute or two were of the sauté stage.
And all remaining ingredients and mix well. You can taste at this point to adjust seasonings, particularly the Tonys for salt.
Place in a 325 to 350° oven, either in this pot or in a baking dish. Cover the dish for the first two hours or so of cooking, then remove the cover to reduce the liquid volume a bit and develop a little more color on the beans. Total cooking time should be around three hours or so.

We use a similar recipe/procedure except with the addition of bell pepper (green and red) and when sauteing the veggies add a tablespoon or so of dark brown sugar to caramelize.

These are pretty sweet which I like, but you ca adjust the brown sugar if needed.

Mine is very similar to Otis’ but I like to dump a can of Rotel in there. Hardly noticeable but gives the beans a little kick. Cook uncovered on a pit for a while to get some smoke

5 cans Bush's baked beans; 3 original,1 maple ,1 brown sugar
1 lb. bacon cut into chunks
1.5lb. leftover brisket diced...you can use pulled pork also.
1 medium onion diced
1/2 cup diced green bell pepper
1/4 cup diced red bell pepper
4 cloves of garlic minced...I use more but that's just me.
1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard
3/4 cup sweet BBQ sauce2 TBLS of you favorite BBQ rub black pepper to taste
1 8oz. can of diced pineapple w/juice
liquid as needed for consistency...I use Shiner Bock
Fry bacon and remove, using bacon grease add bell peppers for 10 min. then add garlic after 5 mins. add brisket. Bring up to temp. add bacon then beans add reaming ingredients.
Simmer for 30 mins. then check for seasoning and consistency.

I have. But I'm not always smoking when I make beans. You can dice up some smoked brisket or pulled pork and add to the dish and get that flavor.

Next time I do pulled pork, these beans go under the meat for the last 3 hours to catch drippings.

I always save the drippings. I put a pan with bay leaf, celery stalk, onion cut in half, several toes of garlic some whole black pepper and water. When the butt is done strain the drippings and throw away the veggies. Separate the fat from the juice, then simmer the juice to your liking. Then add fat to get the flavor you like...I sometimes and some BBQ to it also.

We grill ground meat in a hamburger shape and crumble into the beans so it’s gives a smoky flavoring and also I like the small chunks of burger vs. a bunch of ground meat that doesn’t lend much flavor.

I cook mine on the smoker under whatever meat is in there.
3 cans Bush’s smokehouse bbq beans
2 onions/ bell peppers
and browned in a cast iron Dutch oven
1.5 cups of dark brown sugar added to vegetables after browned.
add beans to vegetable mixture
1-1.5 cups of hot favorite BBQ sauce
Leftover bbq from freezer( pork, brisket,etc)
Put in smoker for a couple hours at 225-250 under pork butt, brisket
3 cans Bush’s smokehouse bbq beans
2 onions/ bell peppers
and browned in a cast iron Dutch oven
1.5 cups of dark brown sugar added to vegetables after browned.
add beans to vegetable mixture
1-1.5 cups of hot favorite BBQ sauce

Back before "flavored beans like Bush's, etc" my mom would make cowboy beans. She had to feed 6 kids, dad and her, so this didn't last long. I don't have the recipe in front of me, but this is approximate:
5 cans pork and beans
1 # ground meat (or 1/2 and 1/2 ground meat and ground pork
1 large onion
1 bell pepper
2 rib celery
2-3 toes minced garlic
1/2 to 3/4 cup catsup
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp yellow mustard
ADD Honey or cane syrup to sweeten more if you like
S&P
Use a dutch oven or other large pot. Brown off meat, pull out of pot and set in a strainer. Brown veggies, season with S&P, until soft over medium heat, add garlic toward end of sautée. Add meat, beans and other ingredients, stir and cook over low heat. Taste after an hour and add more seasoning and sweet aspect if you'd like.
