For sure

I would venture to guess it'd be around half the regular range, but I agree, would need to see real world numbers on towing range.

If I cant roll coal and have obnoxiously loud exhaust whats the point of a truck?

Why does the front end look like a back end?

I'd be very interested in getting their SUV model if they release it. A lot of people are really anxious to know how they do pulling a trailer. In theory they could be superior to any 1/2 tons on the road today. Lots of torque, plenty of weight, and independent power to each wheel.
Just depends on how well they execute.

Electric motors, in general, are far superior for heavy towing than IC engine which is why essentially every locomotive has electric motors.

Those locomotives still need diesel, correct?
Posted on 8/28/19 at 11:13 pm to Eli Goldfinger
I would definitely drive it, but I wouldn’t buy it. I’m not spending over $40k on a goddamn pickup truck.

Well you’ve got a year or two to make your move

.. to generate electricity for the electric motors. I think they still use diesel for cruising but use the electric motors for changing speeds.

No.....
A diesel locomotive is essentially a power plant on wheels.
The prime mover, the big diesel engine, drives a main alternator which provides power for the traction motors applied to each axle. There is no direct mechanical connection between the prime mover and the axles.
eta-They have actually be used to power towns before when there has been an extended power outage.

No, the diesel engines are only connected to the generators, the electric motors provide all the tractive force, there is no physical connection between the diesel prime mover and the wheels. These account for essentially all the locomotives used on Class 1 RRs in the US save so electrics in areas with overhead catenary. Over time there have been some diesel-mechanical locomotive built but not sure if there are any left in the US and they were always used for switching duties, primarily owned by industries not the actual railroads.

Cool beans. So electric is even better for cruising. Once range and/or charging speeds and infrastructure get better it'll be all over for ICE. It's amazing that it's taken so long to get here.

One other thing that is interesting since most modern locomotives have no way to store power much of the locomotive's braking comes from turning the traction motors into generators/alternators and running the current through a large resistor grid on the top of the locomotive, it literally turns speed into heat which is essentially what happens with a mechanical brake just a different mechanism. It is called dynamic braking.

Drive it, yes. Own it, no.

No, the problem isn't the range. It's making it affordable.

That being said and just throwing it out there, $40k on an electric vehicle isn't the same as $40k on an ICE vehicle. Total Cost of Ownership after 5 years shows that similary priced vehicles, the EV will likely come up decidedly cheaper.
