Substandard Scorsese is still WILDLY entertaining. Departed may not be aging as well as some of his others did, but it’s rewatchable as hell. Sort of a send-up of a typical Scorsese movie with a Boston gloss on it.

Damon in the Departed is a great example.

I like Damon and he had his moments in The Departed, but by comparison he was much weaker here than in many of Leo's lead outings.

Damon just never lived up to the promise showed in Good Will Hunting - and in his shoes I would have taken the megabuck, franchise pictures over DDL-style, hyperselective Oscar-bait roles, too.

Leo did live up to that early promise - to a degree (however much I chafe at the Romeo and Juliet and Titanic versions of Leo that are almost laughable to me) - particularly in The Aviator, OUATIH, by all reports WofWS, etc.

ETA: Even Shutter Island, which may be a weaker picture, overall, Leo was great in it.

wasn't he nominated for the revenant before it even was released in theatres?

The Revenant - Limited release Dec 25, 2015 to qualify for 2015 year awards.

It went wide release Jan 8,2016

Oscar nominations - January 14,2016

ETA: It's not possible to be nominated before a movie hits theaters.

I think many people share your opinion RE: Leo but I don't.

Damon's biggest problem is (other than the Bourne series) he's often best when making the audience uncomfortable or angry in a part like the talented mr Ripley or the informant or the departed.

He can make me genuinely dislike him. DiCaprio generally just doesn't make me forget he's acting. I appreciate the plot and the writing but his characters are just incompletely human in some way I don't think I can put my finger on.

DDL outshined Leo in GoNY because his character was far more interesting than Leo’s.

And because DDL outshines everybody

As good as Leo was in the Revenant, I think Tom Hardy was even better and stole the show in that movie.

I was telling someone the same thing the other day. Also, the AA for best supporting was absolutely stacked. I walked out of Creed thinking Stallone was going to win, then saw The Revenant and Hardy was incredible. Thought it was coming down to those two but Rylance ended up beating them both. I believe Bale was in there as well.

I think he should've won for Blood Diamond and The Departed.

Also had Ruffalo in Spotlight. Ridiculously stacked year

As for Leo only winning 1, its a very hard thing to win. DDL is only guy with 3 and theres only a handful of guys with 2 wins (Hanks, DeNiro, Brando to name a few). This is for Best Lead Actor which I should mention

Christian Bale only has 1 and it was for supporting actor.

Joaquin Pheonix has 0 with 3 nominations, Gyllenhaal has 0 with just 1 nomination

How did he not get an Emmy for playing the homeless kid on Growing Pains?

I just wanted to mention Catch Me if You Can and Great Gatsby as movies where he captures the character very well.

The guy is an entertaining actor. He’s not in the conversation of GOAT but he always delivers a solid performance.
