Heading to Nashville and hoping to find some good places to see music casually. Punk, harder rock, up and coming country/folk, anything new and interesting. Trying to avoid the really touristy spots. Any tips would be help. TIA

Bluebird Cafe. They have shows and once a week (I think Monday) is open mic night, where 22-25 beginning artists will get up and do a song. Depending on the number a few will be asked to do a second.
Little place, you need reservations. We got into an open mic show by getting there a couple hours before the doors open and waiting in line. We were the last couple seated. Worked out well, we were in the first table off the stage, right center of stage.

For the next two Thursdays**, Lightning 100 / WRLT is putting on a free music show at Public Square Park called Live On The Green.
**1) you missed tonight's show, with Gary Clark Jr headlining.
**2) next Thursday is even better
**3) the third week -- over Labor Day weekend -- goes Thursday through Sunday, with two stages.

I’ve heard that the Ryman was “the church” and a must; unfortunately, it looks like there is the Opry Country Classics on Thursday (I was told kind of corny) and Marina on Friday. I’m not familiar w her at all. Also, I was told there will a great music festival (Pilgrimage Festival?) that weekend.
This is info for the LSU Vandy weekend

We went to the Listening Room Cafe last time we were there and really enjoyed it.

We saw JJ Grey at Marathon Music Works. Good venue. Nowhere near all the bullshiv of the strip.

Pilgrimage is put on by Kevin Griffin from Better Than Ezra. The lineup is pretty good, imo. It’s in Franklin, just outside of Nashville. One year I’ll make it up there for the festival.

Might check out Frank Foster at Exit/In after the game. Near the stadium and he sounds pretty good on the youtube.
