FERNADALE, Md. (WJZ) — A 61-year-old man is dead after he was shot by an officer trying to enforce Maryland’s new ‘red flag’ law in Ferndale Monday morning.
Anne Arundel County Police confirmed the police-involved shooting happened in the 100 block of Linwood Avenue around 5:17 a.m.
quote:
According to police, two officers serving a new Extreme Risk Protective Order (Red Flag Law), a Maryland protective order to remove guns from a household, shot and killed the man listed on that order.
“Under the law, family, police, mental health professionals can all ask for the protective orders to remove weapons,” said Sgt. Jacklyn David, with Anne Arundel County Police.
That man was identified as Gary J. Willis of same address.
Officials said Willis answered the door while holding a handgun.
Willis then placed the gun next to the door.
When officers began to serve him the order, Willis became irate and grabbed his gun.
quote:
One of the officers tried to take the gun from Willis, but instead Willis fired the gun.
The second officer fired a gun, striking Willis. He died at the scene.

Story is from 2018 but it seems relevant now that republicans are folding to gun control.

Dont pick up a gun in front of cops and become irate and you wont get shot. Its spouted all the time on this board if you comply you wont die.

You’ll see hundreds if not thousands of deaths on both sides (police/military and civilian) if widespread gun confiscation becomes a thing.
That’s just a fact. People aren’t going to just hand them over.

The cops should have realized the entire law was unconstitutional and refused to enforce it.
In this instance they were nothing but armed robbers, and now murderers.

People are under the misconception that all it takes to get your guns confiscated under a red flag law is for someone to report you. This is not the case. You can't just call the cops on your neighbor and ask them to take your neighbor's guns away.

That's the 3rd one it killed today. This Law isn't off to a good start.

In this case all it took was a call from a relative, a hearing (where the accused wasn’t present or informed of) and a signature by a judge. Turns out this request for help from a relative was a death warrant.

What are the other steps then, because it seems like someone just made a call -- or this could be lazy reporting.
Edit: And at the end of the day, the guy was murdered in his own home for having something he legally possessed.

I would really like to know, how the red flag order happened in the first place.

Get in argument with relative, person reports you as crazy to a judge to get revenge. Judge doesn’t like guns anyway so signs the confiscation order without really thinking too much on it.
I’m sure that would never happen though and that this law would never be abused by liberal activists and liberal judges

Wonder if the relative was in the old man's will....?

Uh, no. He fired a gun at the police who were doing their job.

If he has not been to a court proceeding, and has no knowledge of any of this, and cops just show up at his door, and announce that they are there to take his weapons?
They would just appear to be tyrants.

The cops didn't break his door down, he answered the door holding a gun. Sounds like this law was applied correctly.
I'm pro 2nd amendment and a gun owner. But this guy got himself killed, it's not the cops' fault. He could have complied and then appealed the judge's decision. He chose not to do that.

Comply, while his rights are trampled?
You and I, are on different planets on this issue.
I do agree that he shouldn't have answered the door though.

Lot of doublethink going on in this thread.

Do we know if he knew it was the police? Maybe he didn’t and since it was 5:00 am he was armed for protection. We know he put the gun down (likely after determining it was the police) and then picked it back up (probably when they attempting to take it). The article here says he shot at them, most others say it was dropped in the struggle and went of hitting no one. It’s a sad story

Well if he complied he would still be alive. Then he could have used the legal process to get his guns back. If he lost he could just move if he wanted to own guns that badly.

Not really, you're just being idealistic and I'm being pragmatic.

Well he shouldn't have picked it back up. How is it any different from a cop telling a person not to reach for the glove compartment?
