In your opinion, why are we having so many mass shootings?

People being crazy isn’t new. There has always been crazy people.

People having guns isn’t new. For as long as there has been such a thing as a semi-automatic firearm, Americans have had access to to them. At one time they even had such easy access to fully automatic that they could be ordered through a catalog.

So crazy isn’t new, guns aren’t new. So what is? What’s changed to make so many people decide to start mowing people down randomly?

mass shootings get reported on national news more than single shootings. i'd venture to say that nola, chicago, and atlanta have lost at least 5 people in the last 2 weeks because of shootings.

It is most logical to conclude that there are a host of reasons. But, if there is a list of reasons, what do we put on this list?

Aye, there's the rub.

Social media and other places for line minded nutjobs to mingle.
Before it was all lone loose cannons. Now every one of them usually has a manifesto on some site somewhere.

So I say mental illness plus social media is a big problem.
Pre 80s they had places to put the crazies.

More and more incels with access to message boards to talk about why they can't get laid and how it's everyone else's fault.

NOLA had five shootings in the weekend.
But we are so desensitized to it. Really the shootings yesterday I'm desensitized to. I don't even care to follow the news cycle.

Because we don't institutionalize the crazies like we used to anymore as well as the decline of the number of good mental health professionals.

Well before you go on, why don't you tell us just how many more there are. What's the increase? per capita?

Because you might be working with a false premise here

We have people who post here that talk about carrying guns when mowing the grass and wanting to kill their neighbors over 6" of mowing over property.
I'm sure we have loose cannons here that are just one bad day away from falling down.

There has been a huge spike in these incidents over the past decade. Not sure what's different.

Columbine happened with the assault weapons ban in effect and the spike didn't start until several years after it expired. Mental health is a mandatory benefit under the ACA so I would expect that there are fewer untreated crazies, not more.

Mass shooters study other mass shooters and adapt their tactics. That would make them more lethal, not more common.

We used to put the crazy people away in the funny farm. Now we just medicate them and let them roam free. Once their off their meds, all bets are off.
