Drives me insane when people stand next to a cable while cars are being pulled like that. The danger is unreal
2 years ago, I reconstructed a 16 year old kids forehead. He was standing in the truck bed when apparently the rusted old D ring snapped on the vehicle being towed. The towing hook caved his forehead in like a coke can.
Ive also seen cases where bystanders feet/lower legs were run over when the tow straps suddenly snapped while the towing driver had his gas floored.

Do you think the tower should be held responsible for the injuries? A responsible tower should clear the area IMO

as slow as the winch moves, wouldn't you be able to turn off winch if the FJ started moving toward the water? And, when using the winch, wouldn't you wedge something (eg rock) under tires to prevent it from moving?
Yes to the first part. Not really to the second - you pretty much need to tether to something stationary.

Winching is typically a two person team. The person operating the winch and vehicle and the person handling the winch line. There should only be one person on the winch line and you should always have a line weight even if you're using synthetic. The person operating the winch is responsible for making sure everyone is clear of the line when they start pulling. That may not be a written rule but it was the rule myself and my fellow offroaders always used. There should NEVER be anyone near a winch line when it's in tension.

I totally agree.
One other concern using the wench to pull out the truck is the water could have swept the pickup downstream taking the FJ with it. At least with the tow strap it can be cut close to the FJ's hitch and save the vehicle.

I like LSU but that is just dumb. Congrats on making yourself look like a dbag

May i interject...
Having watched this dramatic rescue a number of times, i would have to say this is as bad the balloon boy story back in 2009.

Or the moon landings.

Chief, it definitely wasn't staged, after careful review, but there were mistakes made.

What does liking LSU have anything to do w rescuing someone? You see all those people that picked up their bikes and left once those humans were stranded? Terzah may be a Dbag but you are an a-hole.

Chief,
I assume you didn’t watch the end when Terzah exited Big Bird and the stranded driver exited his car? Watch again and you will see a sincere thank you and handshake. Very emotional moment

We must be from the same neck if the woods. Because everytime I've seen a z71 get stuck someone made the point to get everyone's attention and tell everyone almost exactly what you just stated.
