He said the following when I asked that question: if I rip their bumper off I am not going to have it go through my windshield and then forehead. What dumbass would do that- direct quote

Never pull in reverse.

The reverse ratio is likely not lower than 1st anyway.

I had the same fleeting notion for a moment. Not sure what prompted that.

I have studied the video many times now. I don't believe it was staged.

Thanks for your blessing sir. Instead of spending that time studying it, you should have just asked your resident retard Dhillip. He has good instincts when it comes to real life heroes like Terzah.

So is the vehicle in the water totaled?

It depends... for all practical purposes it would be. A hydrolocked engine is usually toast. Now, seeing it's an older truck that was swamped by freshwater, in theory you could gut it, replace the engine and use it as a toy but keeping it as an everyday driver would eventually nickle and dime you to death unless you are mechanically inclined.

WTH was that guy thinking standing next to the tow rope while it was in tension? That's a good way to get chopped in half. To make it worse they didn't even have anything over the towline.

Wow. What a bunch of idiots but why didn't the rescuer use his winch?

Unspooling and respooling a winch is a PITA. Tow strap is way easier plus as light as that FJ is compared to the force needed it may have winched the FJ into the water.

Winch was never an option. Who would be at fault if the strap popped and poked an eye out of an onlooker?

Because I emailed TD to figure out how to link the video and he uploaded it for me. I am not as tech savvy as you experienced posters.

Chicken apparently studied the video when he uploaded it and quickly accused me of staging this catastrophic incident which I don't appreciate. Multiple posters confirmed that the idiots car is fricked.

Terzah is going to upload the car getting stuck to finally put to bed the false accusations of staging.

as slow as the winch moves, wouldn't you be able to turn off winch if the FJ started moving toward the water? And, when using the winch, wouldn't you wedge something (eg rock) under tires to prevent it from moving?

Chicken I agree that the winch would have likely just pulled the FJ towards the submerged vehicle. I once winched out a Land Rover that was in a snowbank. I was on the pavement in my Jeep and had to tie off my back bumper to a telephone pole to be able to winch him out. Nothing else we tried would stop the winch from dragging my Jeep down the road.

Redstick, if you knew that the FJ wouldn't lurch towards the water with the winch, is the winch preferable to tow strap? And why?

With the vehicle full of water it's not likely the winch would have enough power to pull the vehicle out even if you anchored the pulling vehicle. You would most likely need a pulley so you could double line it. Hooking up a tow strap and locking the hubs is faster than rigging up a double line and anchoring off the tow vehicle. I did one particular trail in the San Juan mountains that required me to winch up a rock face. I had a top of the line Warn winch on my rig and it wasn't able to pull me up without some assistance from the engine.
