Trump DOJ goes after Amazon--Mnunchin says Amazon has "destroyed the retail industry"

Mnunchin wrong on Amazon
This is the furthest thing from the truth. Amazon did hurt entrenched big boxes to the BENEFIT of small entrepreneurs and manufacturers excluded from the shelves of Wal Mart, Target, Home Depot, Etc.
Amazon has been great for small manufacturing companies across America. Mnuchin is just wrong when he says Amazon has hurt retail.
Amazon's response is spot on.

quote:
“Small and medium-sized businesses are thriving with Amazon. Today, independent sellers make up more than 58% of physical gross merchandise sales on Amazon, and their sales have grown twice as fast as our own, totaling $160 billion in 2018. Amazon’s retail business competes in the worldwide market for retail sales and represents less than 1% of global retail and less than 4% of U.S. retail. And the vast majority of retail sales – 90% – still occur in brick-and-mortar stores according to the U.S. Census Bureau.”

Munchin is right.
Amazon had devastated retail and is sucking the USPS dry.
Now they want entertainment, Rx, and groceries.

This is part of a bigger effort of states and municipalities to collect sales tax on online retailers.

I'm all for the free market but you're sticking your head in the sand of you don't think Amazon has hurt retail. One thing they do is get you on their marketplace, see what sell well and then order it direct. You scale your business to accommodate for growing sales then Amazon crushes you. I'm not calling for intervention but Amazon is a group of savages.

Good.
WalMart and WalGreens and a handful of media companies have dominated these industries. Amazon, contrary to what Mnuchin contends, adds to choices consumers have and to say they have limited competition is just wrong.

Sounds a little like Teddy Roosevelt's goals of breaking down the monopolies. This is a true fight for the little guys.

Wrong.
They gave avenues to brands that could not get on the shelves at WalMart and other big boxes. There is no question they EXPANDED retail.

Way to omit the other part of my answer. Par for the course of this narrow thinker

I think we (conservatives) are 90% free marketers. But at some point you gotta do what you gotta do. You ask yourself: "are we better off buying a pair of Wranglers (seconds) for half price and maybe in a slow selling color or protecting the poor (and mostly black females) clerks who would starve and their kids go to the streets". And so much more. Best to go ahead and pay the $35. and get one pair instead of $17 and buying three, TWO of which you don't need. And help honest, hard working people trying to raise their families. But that's just me.

And, you have to be careful because some of the items that could not get on the shelves at these stores are cheap knock offs and fakes masquerading as the name brand item.

It's delusional and border line retarded to claim Amazon hasn't hurt retail.
Of course it has...mind boggling that anyone could try to argue otherwise with a straight face.

Anybody that calls Amazon a monopoly does not understand the meaning of the word.
They have given consumers MORE CHOICES not fewer.
They have made service BETTER at all retailers.
How can he say they hurt retail when over the last 10 years the Dollar General, Academy Sports, Tractor Supply, Harbor Freight, PetsMart, Chewy, retail businesses have expanded like crazy?

And some of them are MUCH better quality than WMT would let on their shelf.
