The "unwritten rule" on that type of thing was that those conversations typically occur the offseason before you enter your last year of your contract (excluding option years).

Agreed, the issue with the trade demand, and how it occurred was that he attempted to tank his own value to other teams. You want to play for a certain team that isn't your own? Okay, do it as a free agent. You shouldn't be able to force your team into trading you to one other specific team.

ETA: that being said, I am very happy with the return that the Pels got in the trade, but it could have very easily go awry. The Lakers were basically forced to do the trade because of LeBron's timeline and the fact that they couldn't throw away another season.
