We are headed to Vail for a wedding, will have one eveing and the better part of a day to spend in the area. Thoughts on a good 2-3 hour hike in the area?

I wouldn't mind finding a place to see the stars one evening either. So much light pollution here in ATL, I am sure it is a different world just 10-15 minutes outside of town.

I don't know anything about Vail especially in the summer, but if you are around a ski area its always nice IMO to look into taking a lift up the mountain. Many of them have hikes from the top of the mountain, you can even take the lift up and hike down. Hiking down an entire mountain is harder on your legs than one would think though.

But if you start from the top, you usually have great views for a much longer portion of your hike.

Booth Falls is a good hike. About 4 miles and 1400' or so. Steep at the beginning and end.

For stars go up to Vail Pass on 70 then exit up there by the bathrooms and take the dirt road up to Shrine Pass. It might not let you get all the way to the pass due to snow. You could also drive up to Lost Lake or Piney Lake on the north side of Vail.

drive up to Piney Lake. Beautiful Alpine lake. Trials start there, canoeing and an ok restaurant.
