The first was a blend of action and a cool premise with philosophical points in the background.

The second and third stripped out a lot of plot (the second starts with machines burrowing to Zion and ends with machines burrowing to Zion) and amps up the philosophy so that it's 5 minutes of lecture and then 5 min of action in a loop.

Matrix 2 will always have this, though.
