Hereditary still remains Ari Aster's best work IMO
He implied that he is stepping away from the horror genre for "awhile" to work on other projects he's had on the back burner.
I agree with you though with the time....it could have definitely been trimmed 30 min. at least.

I was actually bored by this movie.

If you don't mind sharing, what was so grotesque about it? Don't be afraid to provide spoliers for me. I'm interested in seeing the movie, but have zero interest in disgusting or "revolting" material.

The “orgy” scene as well as the “love” potion is very, very weird. Like so weird I got to thinking how could any normal person think that situation up. It isn’t crazy grotesque in my opinion. Just very awkward

I honestly thought the first 20 mins of the film were the most disturbing. You expected weird cult shite to start happening when they got to the festival.

It's not a horror movie by today's definition of the genre.

I guess I'm way out of touch. This is why I clicked on this thread:

Midsommar was the dumbest god damn movie I have ever seen
People can fake their interest of the “mental health horror” line all they want, that shite fricking sucked. Had the theatre not sold beer I would have left.

Now that's a fricking movie review. Here comes your upvote.

It was ok. Very predictable. I just didn't buy the girl turning bad. I saw nothing that would make me believe she'd be ok with her boyfriend and others being burnt to crisp.
I didn’t think it was so much as she turned bad. I think there were element of fate/destiny if you will, with the astrology and stuff like that.
But mainly they were on hella drugs that were to get them “open to emotion” and whatnot. She had to chose who to kill and one option was someone who betrayed her. His friends were mostly assholes to her except the cult guy. Also she had some type of mental illness so probably her cognition was less clouded and she was more open to emotion etc.

Saw this last night and it was one of the most bizarre movies I've ever seen. I really enjoyed it. It was beautifully shot. Parts of the movie reminded me of the NBC series "Hannibal". I really enjoyed how everything happens in the daylight. It added to the bizarreness
I actually enjoyed this more than Heredity.

Just saw it
Liked it a lot
A few things maybe you missed:
The shape of the table they eat at before the old people get killed is actually a rune symbol that means family
When they are carrying the may queen to her wagon there is a side shot that shows a lot of trees in the background and there’s a creepy demonic face in the trees
The girl who looks Mark (maybe not his name, the tree pisser).... after she kills Mark for the rest of the movie she has small cuts and abrasions on her face insinuating Mark struggled when she killed him
All in all I liked it. I don’t think she was crazy in the end I think she was legitimately happy she found a family.

I agree with you about her being happy to have found a family, but I do think she’s pretty much lost her mind too.

I've been very outspoken about how much I disliked Hereditary, as well as Mother. This was the love child of both of those movies, but I liked this one more than those two.
That's not to say I was thrilled with it. The scariest thing about the movie is that every single thing that occurred in the film could happen in real life. No portal to Hell, no machete-wielding maniac, no possessed doll.
People suffer from depression. People commit suicide. Some people turn to drugs as an escape from their reality. People who have lost everything can turn to extreme measures to restore a sense of family. Cults exist, and they can do strange, God-awful things as they perform their rituals.
The entire movie was telegraphed in the art on the walls of the lodge.
That's interesting that someone saw a face in the woods. Very reminiscent of Haunting of Hill House and their dozens of ghosts in the background.

Watched it this weekend. Didn't love it, but definitely will recommend to anyone that has a few hours to kill on a rainy night. The scenes are beautiful enough for that alone.
Love the feeling of a daytrip. I have tried to describe to my friends what LSD during the daylight and outside feels like, and this movie absolutely nails it
Few questions: What was wrong with the first victim? When it showed him behind the black guy in the church, his face appeared to be made of leather? Was that him, or someone wearing his face? I was confused, it was late.
Who were the other deceased at the end other than bearman?
4 visitors including bearman
2 villagers were drawn
who were the other 3? Or is that irrelevant?

It was one of the villagers wearing the skinned face of the guy who pissed on the sacred tree.

There were 9 sacrifices altogether....4 villagers (old couple who jumped off the cliff, plus the 2 guys at the end) and 5 outsiders (British couple, black guy, blonde guy, and Christian in the bear suit).

That's her dead sister who committed suicide with the car's exhaust tube coming from her mouth.
