re: Why can’t BR have a San Antonio type Riverwalk area?

With BR culcha you're talking about creating a hunting reservation essentially.
Sadly, this has a lot to do with it.
I, too, was in SA recently and thought the Riverwalk was great. But BTR just couldn’t support it.

The SA "River" is a flood control device. Pretty much the entirety of the section in downtown, with all the shops along it, is man-made. And it's about half of the width of the 17th street canal.
The city could do more with parks and things, but the MS river isn't conducive to an entertainment district.
I always thought Perkins Rowe was going to take off more than it did.

You can walk anywhere around downtown San Antonio.
You'd need more than a "little security" in BR to secure a Riverwalk type development.

Our river is just a little wider than their's is.
Nothing like ridin on a pontoon barely narrow enough to fit in the "river" drunk as Cooter Brown & eating fajitas.

grow the population of BTR by about 1.2 million and you got it baw.
Do you often wonder if Monroe is getting an NBA team?

I'll give a somewhat serious reply to this idea.
Obviously our river is much larger than the one that goes through SA. The other poster was right in that it was a flood control project and they can control the exact amount of water that flows through the commercial area.
I also agree it is all you hear about in reference to SA, and it is very underwhelming.
I do think that BR could sustain some commercial development among Wards creek or Bayou Fountain. With the plans they have for the green and blue ways along and within the creeks throughout SBR, commercial development poised around central locations of these networks could be a good development opportunity. You can look to the Tammany Trace in St Tammany or the Lafite Greenway in NOLA as to what type of development can be spurred from development of these types of projects.
I'd love to spend an afternoon kayaking to different bars/breweries or a restaurant for lunch or dinner.
One thing that would have to happen is the cleanup/clean out of the trash and growth through work by DPW or dredging of the areas. But you can't say there isn't potential behind the idea.

If we have to engineer this then why stop our wishing at the SA Riverwalk? Lets shoot for Venice... Italy

They'll say it's racist, Shreveport is going backwards, they just repealed the sagging pants ordinance because it's racist to not to be able to hang out your arse and hold onto your dick.
Sagging pants can be claimed to be a "cultural" thing.
Requiring an admission fee that you can recoup with purchase of anything at any of the boardwalk stores is different.
They do that on Beale St. sometimes (and metal detectors) and those people claim racism over anything.

---wrong. It was poorly conceived, planned and executed from start to finish.
It was both actually. I mean they did shut down the open container laws.

Well that should be easy enough. $50/year tops.
Lets start this right after all the sewer, water, culverts, roads, and sidewalks are fixed up.
