But the rant will want his arse GONE as soon as his batting average is sitting at around that same number.

I think most fan bases would criticize a 170 batting avg

Even if it comes from a catcher who is a wall and totally shuts down the base paths?

Take that time with a grain of salt. While he does appear to have some very good tools, don’t forget that this is a showcase and not a game situation. He would never be able to get a time off like that in a game. The best times from the best catchers in the majors don’t have a time that fast during a game.

Are you trying to say Hal Hughes was that at 3rd?
He was good, he wasn’t elite.
And an elite defensive catcher is more valuable than an defensively elite 3rd baseman.

I didn't mention the name Hal Hughes once. I replied to this...

I think Garza gets every opportunity to be the everyday catcher next year anyway, but I would absolutely trade a bat to have a catcher keeping people stuck on the bases.

.170 batting average is not palatable unless the player is absolutely elite in every defensive category.
Even then it’s tough to justify.

I really hate this next generation statistics crap. It’s like watching the NFL combine and talking about the difference in success rates on QBs because of a 1/8” difference in hand size. It’s just turning into a big dick contest on who can come up with the newest, coolest stat.
The dude was already crossing the plate before the ball got there. Not anywhere near actual gameplay.

If there is 7-8 players in your lineup producing, it absolutely is for a defensive stud at catcher. Pap was that guy.

Baseball is not the sport for you. So much information is gathered from this "next generation statistics crap" you speak of. The Astros won a championship behind that crap.

Except Pap was above .200 and got better each year.
He was never a .170 hitter for a season.

I was just making a point dude. This kid isn't batting under .200 either. He's not even on campus yet.

My point is that there is a certain threshold for offense that even the best defenders need to hit

Milazzo 2019 C has consistently been in 1.75-1.9 range since his sophomore year.

and he acts like pop times are some new stat they have been doing pop times for decades... nothing next generation about it

Dude stepped into the throw before he even had the ball. They should do that with a batter swinging.

Way back in the day, .200 was called "The Mendoza Line". Named after Mario Mendoza, an excellent defensive shortstop who hovered ared .200 for several years (He ultimately ended up with a.215 MLB career batting average). The theory is that .200 is the lowest BA that a player can expect to keep him in the majors.
Effectively, if you hit below .200 you're superior defense doesn't offset the offensive production you get from an average defense/average hitting player at the same position.

I could see a motion like that resulting in a lot of catcher’s interference calls.
