Will be there July 5 through 11. 3 adults, 2 kids. We have activities planned all over the area (i.e. Zoo, Sea World, Lego Land, etc.). We will have a rental car.
Thanks in advance.

Mission Beach or Pacific Beach.... You would be close to Sea World and Belmont Park. Will have the ocean on one side in Mission Beach and the Bay on the other. You would be 35 minutes from La Jolla and 25 minute drive from Downtown SD if you wanted to catch a baseball game.
Forgot you are not far from the Zoo and the Park either, like a 15-20 minute trip. 10 minutes from Old Town area and like 15 from Little Italy. Assuming traffic isn't bad at all of course.

Second Mission Beach or PB. I stayed in PB on the boardwalk/beach and met up with family at Sea World. It was a 10-12 minute drive (hardly any traffic) from my hotel to Sea World parking lot.

This isn't a bad idea at all. I've stayed primarily in Mission Beach and it's great for walking to the beach.
That said, MB/PB are close enough to downtown that you can flip it if you want and stay downtown. It's easy to get from the beach to downtown and vice versa. I'd decide which you prefer to walk around and base there. If you only want a single day at the beach, you might prefer downtown.
They're both within 30 minutes of a ton of attractions.

Awe man, yall will be missing Comic Con by a week. At this point it's too late to get tickets(plus going inside is apparently insane), but I hear it's really fun to hang out around the convention center just to see all the amazing costumes.

Mission Beach area seemed a little run down imo. Stay in La Jolla if you can

Run down?
compared to what, it is very similar to La Jolla. Although him bringing kids he is going to want to be close to areas to keep those things entertained

The wife and I will be there for a week at the end of this month. We're staying at the Omni.

Tons of homeless in the Gaslamp area, at least you are close to the stadium and if you got a room facing the stadium you can catch a game.

We didn't plan on spending much time in the Gaslamp. I've already checked the Padres schedule and unfortunately they will be on the road the whole time we are there.

I have been 3 times and always stayed in Del Mar. Very nice beach.
San Diego Zoo Safari Park is worth seeing.

Not glamorous at all, but we stayed in the Residence Inn at Del Mar. It was comfortable, nice enough, and affordable. Since you have a car, getting around won't be a problem.

Mission beach has a zillion awesome vacation rentals. If OP is going to MB, I'd definitely go this route.

Mission Beach isnt bad but an absolute disaster with traffic and all the fools from AZ taking over so not the greatest for kids around that time
Pt Loma area might be the best and cheapest like Shelter Island Kona Kai Resort is my suggestion. Amazing views, restaurants, nice beach, great for kids Fireworks every Friday. OB MB and PB beaches right near and Zoo/Seaworld around the corner or you can try
Cardiff, Encinitas, La Jolla Shores

Awesome hotel. The homeless arent around there. They are more on 16th street
You can walk to all the best restaurants and make sure you go to Puesto Tacos in the Headquarters Seaport Village
Basic Pizza is also around the corner and a must and the Nolen for the rooftop bar/food is a must for the view
Carnitas Shack on the Embarcadero. And try Cafe 21 for breakfast.
Also Born and Raised in Little Italy for the goat steak or Crack Shack also in little Italy Fried Chicken
Try Phils BBQ if you want out of DTown

We stay here every time we go to SD. The local is perfect - easy access to everywhere - the Zoo - the airport - Old Town, nothing was more than a 15 minute drive.

I say this with tongue on cheek but since we where just in La Jolla 3 weeks ago I can confidently say that just about ANYWHERE in San Diego County close to water will be better than anyplace in Louisiana.
Enjoy SD! Wheter you stay in PB, OB, MB LJ or up the coast to Delmar or Solana Beach....you will be in good shape.
