Help me understand this horse track bet

Took a several of my friends to Evangeline Downs last night, and had a pretty nice time. The weather and the company was great. I've only been to the horse races about a dozen times in my life, so I barely know enough to place a bet.
My fav bet has always been a Trifecta Box. Which if I understand correctly, I'm picking which horses will Win, Place, and Show, in no. particular order. Correct?
About Race 4 or so, I bet $12 on the 2-4-7 horses, and they finish in the top 3 places. I don't recall, but there was probably only 6 horses in the race. I'm excited, thinking I'll proabably win $30 or so. Give my gf the ticket to cash (thinking I will impress her with gambling prowess.). She returns with $8 and some odd cents.
Really? Did I actually lose money on that bet? I squeezed her for the rest of the winnings, but she insists that's all she got. Then my friend tells me the same thing happened to him on the same race, although the bet it slightly different.
Is it possible to lose $ on a Trifecta Box bet even when you get it right?
By the way, afterwards, took a tip from Willowick and ran up to Washington to The Steamboat Restaurant for dinner, and it was great! I recommend it.

I always thought you had to get them in the right order.

If it’s a favorite parade you will lose money even if you win. I’m chickenshit so I box everything, but it makes the bet more expensive.
Your winnings are based on the odds of the horses that come in.
LSU fan, not if you box them. That covers any order but you pay for it.

Depends on the odds of those 3 horses
If you picked the 3 with the best odds, a box isn't going to amount to much
It's a granny bet

The .50 trifecta only paid $2.00 if you bet it straight. By boxing it, you bet any possible combination of the 3 horses for .50. Because all the horses had low odds, you lost money.

When you box a trifecta, you're making 6 different bets. Say you're boxing the 1, 2 & 3 horses.
You're making the following $2 bets:
1,2,3
1,3,2
2,3,1
2,1,3
3,1,2
3,2,1
One of these $2 bets won and had about 4-1 odds, hence your $8 payout.
In the future, if you're betting favorites, try not boxing them. Or, try an exacta box where you're only picking win and place, but only making 2 bets ($4).

The house takes out something like 24% in horse racing first off. And yes it is possible if you have 3 clear favorites and 3 hags running

Sorry to change the subject somewhat. Is the Louisiana Downs worth going to around Shreveport? I’ve never been to a horse track but thought about going with kids just for the hell of it. Do you just walk in and sit anywhere or do they have a fee to get in? I tried looking online and not much info on all that.

If the three favorites finished 1-2-3 then you’re obviously not gonna win much. The only way you’ll win a significant amount is if you pick a couple with low odds and they manage to finish top 3. I usually bet on jockey, not horse. Saenz and Melancon are usually the best jockeys there so I’ll bet on them no matter what the horse’s odds are.

You won $8 on a $2 bet-
You made 5 other $2 bets that lost.
Boxing 3 favorites rarely pays off, unless it’s a huge field with a lot of action.

It was a box, you lost more bets than you won

Betting trifecta boxes in 6 horse fields will not pay out alot unless the 2 long shots come in first.
