Online charter school purchases an entire hotel in Baton Rouge

The nonprofit organization that operates University View Academy, an online charter school for Louisiana students in grades K-12, has purchased a 108-room hotel on Valley Creek Drive for $6 million with plans to turn the building into teaching space.
Foundation for Louisiana Students bought the Comfort Suites University at 3045 Valley Creek Drive in a deal that was filed Monday with the East Baton Rouge Clerk of Court’s office. The seller was SRG Investment LLC of Baton Rouge.
Michael Marsh, communications director for University View, said the charter school needed more rooms for its teachers' online presentations. Enrollment will top 3,200 children in the upcoming school year, and University View will be able to add 240 students per year.
“The teachers are on top of each other,” Marsh said. The teachers host live online classroom sessions and it gets “very loud and noisy with no privacy.”
The cost of building more teaching space was “astronomical,” so buying the hotel was a perfect fit, he said. Because the rooms are all suites, the front portion will be turned into office space for the teachers. The beds and furniture that can’t be used for office or teaching space will be removed.
“Teachers will be able to decorate their learning space in any way they want,” Marsh said. They will also have their own bathroom.
The Comfort Suites closed Friday in advance of the sale. The plan is to put two teachers in each of the hotel’s 108 rooms. The teaching space will be ready by Aug. 19, when the new school year starts at University View.
Sounds like a successful outfit.
I'm sure the OT will deliver at least 3-4 solid jokes about this.

There was a charter school built close to where I live a few years ago.
Can someone explain to me how they make money? Does the state give them money?

Their model is probably the future of education. There's really not much of a need to be physically in classrooms anymore.

Schools need to move online and all the buildings/properties need to be sold to developers.

Teachers won't even have to leave the classroom to sleep with their students. Win-win for both student and teacher. Maybe Little Johnny can keep his mouth shut.

Meh.
The social interaction of being in the classroom is way more important than any subject taught in modern schools. At least through high school.

Perfect location for the teachers to work their part time job at Penthouse around the corner.

Honestly, I hope it never gets to the point where kids will not have to leave home to get their education. Socially, I think it would be a bad idea.

Bump, I really want to know how these outfits make money.

Huge loss for the Penthouse. I imagine a lot of workers took clients to that hotel for extra side work

It’s a bunch of poor people. Where do you think the money comes from?

It's probably a negative for most kids today.
I imagine other types of social involvement will come out of it. Coops where several kids get together in one home and do work together, band, sports, etc.

Easy guys...
It is a nonprofit charter school, so it operates in the same manner any other NP charter school does. $ comes from the state for each student that enrolls.

For college, absolutely. Remembering what I do from elementary through high school, most kids at those ages aren't responsible enough to log in online and do their assignments. Also, if you eliminate actually going to a building for school when the kids can't drive yet, it then forces working parents into a tough situation because their 8 year old does school online at home. Just wouldn't work. Some people use school solely as a daycare, but in addition to learning, it does provide a way for parents to work while not having to worry about someone watching their kids.

The charter schools are paid by taxpayer money for each student they admit. In October, after the official count has been done, the charter schools start purging students, for any reason. Behavior, performance any reason really, those students return to the public school system. The charter school still gets the taxpayer money for educating the student. Its a cycle, sign up as many students as possible, get the official count for the year, purge, get paid.
