If consumers will pay the tariffs, WHY did US companies move?

I keep hearing this mantra, US consumers will pay the tariffs. Does that mean they have no choice but to buy the goods and pay the tariffs. If so, why did US companies ever leave the US for cheaper manufacturing, US consumers were going to pay a higher price right, so why did they bother?

By installing tariffs, the cheaper alternative is removed or placed in a closer quality and price consideration.

Tariffs will hurt. But they hurt the other side more. That’s the point..... they are not long term or permanent. They are lunatics to get a change in action....

Im trolling fellas. I just keep hearing consumers pay the tariffs as if there are no other market factors in place. Shifting supply chains, eating the margin or losing the business, as well as many others.
For once in decades we are using our clout as the largest market in the world, and some on here seem more concerned about their avocado toast than the demise of their country.

The voices that should be heard are the manufacturing labor unions, but of course they are mostly democratic.
Manufacturing and blue collar jobs left the country due to much cheaper labor elsewhere, the tariffs help to level that playing field.

Typical scare tactic. Its the same with taxes. No one has ever called their bluff and told them to GTFO.

"pay"....just what is the cost and who will 'pay' for all those poor and sick and many unemployable (for various reasons) illegal immigrants that are storming the Border by the tens of thousands? Projected to be a million this year. What will the TOTAL be for the Social Services required to meet their needs; and or the incarceration costs of illegal immigrant lawbreakers? Or how these massive cost will affect Medicare and Social Security for all the folk who have PAID IN for their whole life?
The cost on stuff is nothing in relation to the real cost our society will pay. Shell game up there; Trump needs to expose it with a big time, highly publicized educational Speech on this subject...real numbers included. Let the MSM run into that wind.

Taxes from the democrats. They are trying to make as much profit as possible. Funny how democrats are against everything they want . Democrats should be 100% against buying goods from other countries. It hurts the carbon footprint and helps the rich profit more .

You say they won’t last long term but Xi does not have to get re-elected

Many Democrats for years, including Bernie, have wanted tariffs. Bernie always stumped for tariffs. But orange man bad.

So DJT stole the idea from Bernie. Interesting.

I wish this board understood absolute and comparative advantages. Countries are better suited / more efficient than others at certain tasks.

this board is obsessed with the American economy devolving for some reason

I would desperately love to see some polling of rank and file members in industrial unions.
Regardless of whether Trump wins or loses in 2020, if he can break the blue collar union vote from the Corporatist Third-Way Dems their leadership supports, it will be a great thing moving forward. Same with the black and Latino vote.
Isn't it about goddamn time that candidates earned our votes by representing the issues that are important to us?

Nah, more than two people throughout history have supported tariffs

Consumers will pay for part of the tariffs in the short term, and then the market adjusts, adversely affecting producers in a variety of ways.
This isn't really up for debate. I don't know why people give any of the IB Chinaman/MSNBC talking points the time of day.
