Can anyone recommend a good bike for a bigger fellow with a budget around 750 or less to start? Mostly on pavement with no drastic elevation changes; some long grades. Most outings will be less than 15 miles with the occasional 30+ mile outing.
Thanks in advance.

I’m no bike pro, but have had a few cheap-ish used bikes over the last few years (Seem to go through them quick in NOLA)... never went high end but would rather get something a few cuts above Walmart butwasn’t trying to spend a ton
I’d say my favorite that I had was a cannondale quick 6. Think it was like $5-600 new and snagged it for about 3 lightly used? It’s been awhile.
Wasn’t flashy but was sturdy and performed well for roads/rough roads. Low/easy maintenance. Was riding about 10-15 miles most days. Someone chopped the lock though.

Thanks for recommendations. I will look into both of these.

are you looking for a road bike or something with flat bars?

I am thinking I should probably start back with a flat bar for a while.

then check out the higher-end Trek FX or Specialized Sirrus

In order to not start a new thread...
What would be the cheapest option for a half iron man? The Cervelo P3 is what a buddy of mine used in Chattanooga. They are at least 1500 used. I couldn’t possibly justify that for what is likely a one time deal.

you could do it on a $500 road bike with clip on aero bars... but the Cervelo is certainly the better option

If it's only one time and just to finish, get a road bike. That will be the best financial decision.
A tri bike will cut a lot of time though. Intro bikes start at around 2k MSRP, but deals can be found. Used is the way to go for a good deal. Cervelo is probably the most expensive brand, but holds its value well. You can look at Felt B series. It's a great value bike and there are probably good used deals.
Dont forget all the other stuff though. Pedals, shoes, helmet, tri suit, wetsuit, etc. can all add up to over 500 easily. Triathlon is expensive.

If you only wanna do one half, get a cheap and used road bike. In fact, I’d recommend a power meter on a road bike before a tri bike with no power meter. I’ve got an $8000 bike with $1700 worth of wheels and an $900 power meter, but once again-I’m all in!

Lot's of good bikes for that price. Go by a reputable bike store and find one that is sized appropriately. It will make the rides considerably more comfortable and help prevent injury.
