I never watched it but I'm curious why it seems to have died down?

Seasons of little to no activity or direction bit the show in the arse.

It wasn’t from a lack of source material either, as there were literally years of stories from the comic series they could do directly or use as inspiration for deeper stories, yet it didn’t happen for a while.

They finally got to Negan, who was the focus of some of the better stories, but they appeared to bleed out their audience getting to him.

I think going from one dreary/dire situation to another with no end in sight just wears on a large audience. Then you had just tons of filler episodes that were either unnecessary or irrelevant to the main plot. Basically, AMC just wanted to milk it for as long as possible.

I checked out after season 6 so I'm not sure if its redeemed itself or not, but doesn't seem to have ever gotten the huge audience back

Ratings speak for themself. Became too predictable, unbelievable (even for a walking corpse show), bad dialog, plot, gimmick...then repeats.
