Car is paid off and I need a truck to do work out at the farm, haul hunting stuff, tractor, etc.

Don’t wanna pay over 15k, so mileage will likely be high; but still needs to be reliable. Never owned a diesel before, so what do I need to know?

All good advice appreciated

Dodges tend to be the most expensive with the highest mileage from what I’ve seen searching the net. For good reason I guess.

Buy a 2006-2007 Duramax. LBZ motor is bulletproof and so is the transmission.

The youngest one out there just turned 15, do not do this.

Motor may be fine but the truck will be falling apart around it, same for the

Honestly the best bang for the buck is a 6.0 Ford if it has never been tuned, dirt cheap, recent enough the truck is in good condition, will drag a 7.3 around like a toy, if it even looks like it was used to tow or has larger tires than stock run like the wind though.

If you aren’t familiar with diesels, I would steer clear.

Until that 6.0 blows up.

They can be had for cheap enough that it's worth fixing them assuming you find one with the body and driveline in good shape. There are some out there with ZF6 stick shifts which are all around great trucks.

What are you pulling OP?

I've seen quite a few 6.2 Ford gasses in the 15-17 range with decent mileage. They are all white and an XL package but solid.

My 2013 6.2 4wd does absolutely everything I want. I got a crew cab with 32k miles for 23k.

Nope I stand by my statement.

If unmolested by the owner they are great engines with a few small upgrades.

Tri axle Unverferth Seed Tenders, 36’ Draper Heads, 30’ gooseneck trailers. Just basic farm stuff.

Just noticed you edited to op. Never mind.

Introduced mid-2003, the Ford 6.0L turbo is by far the worst modern diesel engine. It’s so bad, in fact, that Navistar (Powerstroke’s parent company) and Ford had a legal battle over it. The list of issues ranges from head gasket problems to catastrophic fuel system failures. And the best part is, most of these problems require remove of the cab for repair.

The 6.4 was far far worse. At least the 6.0 can be made reliable. The 6.4 cant. It's the ultimate POS.

Not sure who wrote that article but it is inaccurate.

It’s on the internet, it’s got to be true.

People who bash the 6.0 without understanding it are comical. The 6.0 is the perfect truck for the OP.

Yep. They are some of the best looking trucks Ford ever built IMO and have one of the best driveline packages offered. The engine was not THAT bad. It's a modern engine and people treated it like an old one and it cant handle that. "Bulletproofing" is not that big of a deal and the trucks are cheap cheap due to the stigma on the engine

Buy one for a steal, put 2k in the engine, and itll last a lifetime as a 2nd vehicle and yank the axles off of shite doing it

Navistar is notorious for screwing up engines and I am friends with some of their engineers and never stop giving them hell about it. When they decided they were not going the DEF route and were going to design their own system was probably the greatest blunder they ever made. That Maxxforce 13 liter was a total disaster. But that was for big trucks and I understand the OP is talking small trucks. Navistar and GM should stay out of the Diesel engine business.

I really wish that Dodge would offer the Iveco engine in their trucks. The ones we run in our combines and tractors are top notch. Have had zero problems out of them. The Cummins engines are good engines but you will have rear seal problems with them.

I don't know anything about navistar other than the 6.0 and 6.4

GM had some fantastic diesels back in the day.

But moral of the story is if you want a good used diesel, 6.0s can be had for cheap and with some money onto of that OP can have a smoke bellowing monster with 300k miles left in it for 1/4 of the price of new
