Do not buy a ford with the 6.0. I will agree that they were good strong engines under only two circumstances:
1.They were left bone stock and maintenance was done to the T.
2. They were completely bulletproofed and not tortured afterwards.
The 6.0 was introduced around the time that the OBD2 style plug and play programmer craze took off big time. 90% of the 6.0's out there had some type of timing adjustment computer programmer installed and ran on it during it's lifetime. The increase in power from the programmers is what caused most of the problems these engines had: (stretched head bolts, egr problems, etc)
I personally would buy one that I knew without a shadow of a doubt that it had been stock its entire life, but with the amount out there that were programmed and abused it would be equivalent to finding a needle in a haystack. Since you're looking for a budget diesel pickup that's not going to be your daily driver I assume that you aren't gonna want to have to drop a ridiculous amount of money on fixing breakdowns in the near future.
I would go with a dodge with the 5.9 and manual transmission or a 04-06 duramax in a chevy or gmc.
If you're not dead set on a diesel at this point I just did a quick search on auto trader and found a nice 2012 f250 4x4 extended cab for $12k with the 6.2 gas engine and a clean carfax. I promise you it would do anything you want it to do. I pulled a nurse trailer with 13k pounds of starter fertilizer with a single cab chevy 2500 with the 6.0 back in the spring.

solid info. thanks. i was set on diesel, but some of y'all are making me rethink my stance. aesthetics is the main reason i want one, plus i've always thought they get better gas mileage and longer life

It will get better fuel mileage and last longer if you're working it hard. I just dont think they're worth the going rate except for a few exceptions.
For what you're looking to do you absolutely do not have to have a diesel. A gasser with a deep rear end ratio (4.10, 4.30, 4.55, etc) will handle it fine.

A old 300 strait 6 Ford with 4.55's will haul it as far as you like as long as you dont wish to exceed 50 mph.
I am in agreement with you that a diesel is not needed to haul a tractor 5 times a year, if the OP simply wants one that is a bit different.

I have a 2003 Ford F-250 6.0 bought new. Right now iit is sitting here with a bad motor with 164000 miles. That just happened about a year or so ago. Contemplating on what to do with it.

Not sure what exactly "bad motor" means but if you got 16 years out of a F250 using it as intended I would likely just consider that maintenance.
What is wrong with it, I may buy it from you if you are selling cheap enough.

Details on body and engine issues, pls. I wouldn’t mind one to tinker on.

Those "few small upgrades" usually run about $7,000.00
Try about 2-2500

There are deals out there. I bought an 08 Duramax quad cab 4 wheel drive LTZ. It’s got 300,000 Miles on it but was in great shape. It looked new on the inside. I figure it was a hot shot truck because the only seat with any wear is the drivers seat.
I wanted a strong transmission more than necessarily the Diesel engine. Although the 08 lmm is a good engine.

been looking on cars.com and autotrader... any other resources you'd suggest?

I found mine on Craigslist.
I may have just gotten lucky. Mine was really high mileage so it was passed over by a lot of people. The guy dropped the price 3K a few days before I saw it. I talked him down another 1K.
300k miles and everybody has reservations. Lol.

2013 they increased the brakes and stopping power..
Mine is a 2013. I pull a tractor with a giant homemade heavy arse trailer a couple times a year. Does just fine. All I want it too.
I have the 3.73s. it I could I would get the 4.30s. I got a hell of a deal on it. You'd be fine with it.

Parts alone are $3500 so a 2K bulletproof is not feasible
Oil system upgrade
Head gasket & studs

Over 2k for an oil cooler kit? frick that. The latest version Ford has is supposed to be fine, I think it's a few hundred bucks.

Just replaced mine last year on a 06, brand new Motorcraft was $150 on Amazon.
Plugging EGR cost me about 10 bucks for stainless rod and blanks I cut out of scrap.
Still running OEM head studs and head gasket.
275,000 hard miles and counting.
