Desktops were able to last a bit longer, but ultimately, we've reached a heat problem.

I purchased a laptop over three years ago. It was listed at $1,200 and I got it on sale for something like $1,080.

It's still being sold for $1,200. Three. Years. Later.

And it's not because our computing tech hasn't gotten better; it has. It just doesn't matter, because we've reached the limit of our battery and heat dispersement technology. Every increase in computing power must be offset by a reduction in wattage, which is why everything except for high end GPUs have functionally slowed to a crawl.

It's also why we are seeing massive pushes in all the bells and whistles being added to computing; now that they can't sell you on "big number big good", convincing people they need new tech every couple of years has become quite the sell.

Slightly upgraded processor. Slightly upgraded onboard GPU. $100 more.

A decade ago, the upgrade you could acquire for the same or less money three years later was fricking staggering. Now, we're paying the same or more for tiny incremental upgrades. But, until we make some major breakthrough in heatsink and/or battery tech, this is where we are.

You're only talking in terms of laptops though. Probably 70% of the PC community dont really care about their temps as long as they are stable. And Battery doesnt effect the Desktop user. Its just not worth ungrading to more cores as nothing I play even really benefits from the cores.

Unless you want to go liquid, heat is absolutely still a concern on a desktop gaming rig. I'm not sure how you think hand waving away the issue with "as long as they are stable" woo works out for you.

GPUs have continued forward, but that's because that's where the payoff comes in. Wattage keeps dropping and power keeps going up but it's at a glacial pace compared to a decade ago.

Double the cores, double the threads, and the 8th gen chips have amazing single core performance
