Eddie Murphy or Robert Downey Jr

If we’re basing this on celebrity status then it’s probably Ferrell or Sandler.

Mike Meyers hasn’t been relevant whatsoever this decade.
And the answer is Bill Murray.

Eddie Murphy May have been the best.
Adam Sandler has made really great business decisions which put him up there in revenue, but Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mike Meyers, Chris Rock...

It's not close... It's Eddie
He was the biggest movie star in the world for most of the biggest celebrity decade ever: The 80s.
Downey by box office is probably now close, but Eddie has pop culture diety status. All of those 80s icons did.
Eddie, Michael, Prince, Madonna... That's the list. At their peak, all in the same decade (no coincidence) they were probably the biggest global entertainment stars of the last 50 yrs -- not since the heyday of Elvis and Sinatra.
This really isn't debatable. You don't even really associate SNL with Eddie... That's how big of a star he was.
For basically any other name, SNL would be mentioned in the first paragraph of their bio. Downey and Eddie are really the only 2 exceptions....maybe Bill Murray now, but he never had the huge appeal and global following that those 2 do/did.

RDJ doesn’t count. He was not a memorable member of SNL. He really got his start through other means.

Eddie is #2, but he’s fallen off a cliff. I think longevity is important factor, in which case it’s clearly Bill Murray.
And I agree with what the others are saying. Apex: Murphy. Long Term: Murray.

Only person to host as a cast member too! You’re right, Eddie was up there with Prince, Michael...that’s why his brother had all those stories lol.
Eddie Murphy Raw is one of the greatest standups ever...probably THE greatest.
Coming to America was genius. The one liners and barber shop scenes were amazing and Eddie played so many of those characters.

And remember, Eddie has the Shrek numbers to go along with his first half of his career. That's why he's basically doubled Myers, even when his peak was Whnw movie tickets cost half as much.

Also in a somewhat honorable mention, Chris Rock. He’s not really a movie star, but he’s now agreed to be one of the greatest stand up comedians of all time. He may have not gotten to that point without SNL to launch him.

Lots of great answers so far, but not one mention of Chris Farley yet?

Agree, but for the sake of this argument the quality of career and star power aren’t really the same thing. The Rock has been one of the biggest stars the last decade but his resume isn’t exactly filled with classic movies nor is he seen as some great actor

Yep, Eddie
followed by John Belushi.
