What would you do if you won a Survivor Pool (+$800) and never got paid?

Backstory,

The original pool we do was run by a guy who had to back out this year. So this new guy started the pool, and we have two winners (who agreed to split the winnings $811/per person.

Now, we can't get in touch with the guy. He won't answer emails, which i'm assuming is just a "burner" email at this point. Some people in the pool don't paypal, so he did provide his home address.

Should we just let it go at this point?

Pretty much. I don't think there's recourse. You cant report to the police that you didn't get paid your illegal gambling winnings. Are you going to show up to his house and kick his arse? Good chance that doesn't work out for you.

It's not illegal unless the guy running the pool is taking a cut. If a guy set up a home, winner take all survivor pool and absconds with the money, he has committed a crime, not the participants for participating.

He could only be an employee, that's the problem...

He's in Ohio.

I've tried calling him, and I get nothing.

I just stalked him through Google/Facebook and sent a message to his wife.

Does nobody that participated know the guy? Email the whole group and tell them what's going on. I'm sure they would rather pay the winners than this guy that is taking the money. He stole their money. If he's not at least responding to your attempts to contact him then get everyone involved.

If the guy has a unique enough name just buy the domain of his first and last name.com. If his name is common like Bob Johnson add the town he lives in for example bobjohnsonbatonrouge.com. Then make the home page a picture of his face and details on his scamming. Set up the site with google’s SEO and make sure everyone else in the pool googles his name and clicks on that link.

Given enough time that will be the first thing that anyone sees when they google his name which could eventually be a problem for him. He will probably pay pretty quickly.

Make sure that every single statement that is on the site is factual and able to be backed up by evidence and you won’t have to worry about a defamation lawsuit.
