hmmmm..
"Long-time Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts is resigning from the council at the end of business today. The New Orleans Advocate reports Roberts' resignation comes amid a federal investigation.
Roberts has been a member of the council since 2004, when he represented District 1. For the last seven years, he has served as an at-large member.
Roberts has yet to give any reason for the sudden resignation, and appears to have deleted his Twitter and Facebook accounts."

has to be an impending federal indictment.

Roberts has been under an FBI investigation for over two or three years now. Guess this is part of the deal he made with the DOJ.

He's term limited. There was talk he might go back to his old council district seat. Never mentioned for any higher office or even a legislative seat.
It may be that he walks away from politics as part of a "deal" with the feds and he never gets indicted.
Usually if a pol is going to get indicted anyways, they hold off resigning as that is a chip they can use in a plea deal.

then why did he delete all of his social media?

Doesn't want to answer questions and have people ask him questions. Those accounts are tied to his service as a politician, and that's over.
That's just my guess.

and he didn't even give a 17y/o HS kid underwear...

He has a separate account for personal use and one for his office. He purged both of them.

I've been trying to connect the dots on this one. Apparently his former landlord has agreed to plead guilty to concealing income.
Could be Roberts was paying her under the table... but for what? And can they really show that Roberts knew the "cash discount" he was getting wasn't just a legitimate cash discount? They do exist.
Maybe he was remiss in issuing her a 1099 for whatever she was doing for him. Is that really all the feds could find on Roberts, after sniffing around for 2 or 3 years, though? More likely whatever got her that income was inherently illegal and Roberts was part of it somehow.
Not my area of expertise at all, just thinking it through from a position of ignorance.

No chance they put the screws to him over that.

Wouldn't think so. Something's up, though.

It’s possible he was paying Landlord in cash and she didn’t report it, resulting in a charge. FBI forensic accountants can look at your reported income, your actual bank deposits and expenses and your credit cards to figure out your expenses vs your income. if you’re spending way more than you earn, paying for things in cash and aren’t running up credit cards, they’ll see that you’re getting income from some other source.

That was my first thought. If the game was "give me $800 by check every month and another $1,000 cash" then Roberts knowingly facilitated the scam.
If Roberts just paid her all cash, then it's harder to pin it on him. Landlord likes cash, Roberts likes keeping the landlord happy... not criminal.
Pretty idiotic if this is all they have. Roberts and landlord go down for very little financial benefit. Feds spend a bunch of money and pin a tax evasion charge on some random granny... maaaybe Roberts.
Still think there could be more.

Paying in cash is not illegal. There has to be more.

Correct. It isn’t illegal to pay in cash. But when your take home pay is hypothetically $3k/mo and your outgoing monthly expenses total $3k but the Feds see no rent or house note coming out of your account- where did that cash come from?

They aren't doing forensic analysis of his budget unless there was an underlying investigation of something? The forensic analysis could be proof of the crime being investigated not the cause for an investigation. There is more going on.

Roberts has been under investigation for 2-3 years, I think.
He tried to deduct business losses on a couple of Quiznos franchises and there was a dispute over the relevant dates. (You can't carry losses forward forever.)
Not sure if that's what opened this whole can of worms or if they suspected something more sinister.

Landlady is a total B
She's found of selling her crappily designed & built "luxury" condos with a unique property tax strategy... That condo you were buying for 450k, give her 50k cash and then you will only pay property taxes on 400k...

Wonder what will come of this and his ties to the powers that be in Gretna?
