Agree to a certain degree. But something has changed in our society. There are much fewer tough ones to get going. Decades of ridiculing patriotic expressions and elimination of teaching American Exceptionalism has reduced the amount of people willing to fight or sacrifice.
Look at 9/11. Within days of the attacks, one side of the political spectrum was already looking for reasons to blame the USA for provoking the attack. And have been muting criticism of the Islamic world ever since.
