What Was Dr. Mann's Plan In Interstellar?

I don't get it at all. What did he think he was gonna do? If he wanted to get back to Earth, that was not the right way to play it. And if he wanted to go somewhere else, how would he have known anything about it?
The whole sequence with Dr. Mann bothers me in its fundamental lack of believability. And, yes, I realize this movie has wormholes, and I'm okay with that.

He was so desperate to survive, it just didn’t matter.

The dude was stuck on an alien planet where no one was gonna save him, unless he fooled them into coming. That gave him a chance.
Totally believable that someone who is looking out for themselves would do that.

The will to survive made him compromise what morales he had into falsifying data in hopes of being rescued
Freaking great role for Damon.

You’re right.
If he would’ve just said “ hey guys, I lied about the chances of life here so you would come check it out. Now bring me home”
He would still be alive and shite.

He just kills it. I love that casting.

He also symbolizes man’s arrogance. Which is why he’s named Dr. Mann. His hubris won’t allow him to admit he was wrong, so, instead of doing so, he tries to kill/strand his rescuers so he can reframe the narrative to glorify himself.

But you are missing the point. He could have easily gotten off that planet by saying "looks like my data was wrong. My mistake. Now we all gotta go."
Why would he have thought that a plan to kill them all and steal a ship he didn't know how to fly to go to a place that he had no coordinates for or information about sustainability, and insufficient fuel to get back to Earth.
Literally nothing that he could have been trying to do makes any damn sense.

That's a stretch.

He wouldn't have even had to do this, though. He's certainly clever enough to be able to come up with a believable explanation for why his data, which looked promising initially, was for this reason or that reason, ultimately less than conclusive on the subject of human habitability, and certainly painting a more pessimistic than optimistic picture when taken in combo with other recent experiments by other researchers.

He didint have one and it didn't matter... The entire Character was nothing more than a plot point, a tool used to introduce struggle into the story and advance it to the film's climax.
He's basically a mcguffin, only in human form.

It also has tessarects where you end up behind your daughter’s bedroom wall.

Boom, End thread.
Loneliness caused him to lose his shite to the point nothing mattered more than companionship.
That's what makes that character great. You can look at him as a bad guy, but he's really not. He is a person just like you and me that needed another human to talk to.
The lack of companionship circumvented his entire mission.

I feel like you've never read a crime report in the newspaper, online, or watched a story on TV.
People do dumb illogical shite all the time. Even supposedly smart people do really dumb stuff.
You need to start watching Dateline and 20/20 with your wife.

The reason he couldn't dock was because TARS disabled the auto pilot.
Dr Mann was supposed to be the greatest scientist ever. He had a reputation to uphold and couldn't be seen lying and possibly dooming all of mankind just to save himself.

Remember how crazy Tom Hanks went in "Castaway"? Well imagine being stuck (alone) on an inhospitable planet, in another universe, for 20+ years.
Couple that with the fact he was the lead explorer of project Lazarus, so he selected what he thought was the best choice of the possible future planets based on the data he had on Earth. He fricked up his choice of planet, and this is a guy who doesn't make mistakes his whole life.
Until he realized he could do the very thing he instructed the others not to do. Push the button saying "all clear".
He had to dismantle his robot helper because the robot was going to self destruct and kill Dr. Mann to protect humanity and the mission from failing.
If all this would've been found out by the crew that rescued him, why would they want to take this psycho with them to another planet where he can put himself first once more if a tough decision appears again?
He's past the point of no return. It's better to leave no witnesses and write his own story and be the hero he's always been when he re-established earth.

He’s up there for me which makes it so brilliant of a casting and character.
I was in no way expecting Matt Damon to emerge from that sleep chamber, and immediately I felt myself liking Dr. Mann even more BECAUSE he was Matt Damon (not to mention all of the other praises of Dr. Mann throughout the film), who is so recognizable and admirable in most of the roles he plays. And then he unexpectedly pushes Cooper off the cliff and everything came crashing down on me leading to the climax of the film. It was truly a wave of emotion when I saw that entire sequence of events unfold.
As another poster said he’s there to propel the film to its incredible climax and Matt Damon was a perfect, unexpected choice to do that.

I really think the movie would have been better if they simply cast Bryan Cranston as Dr Mann. I just can’t buy that Matt Damon could convince 13 people to go on a suicide mission with him. I’d have no problem buying Walter White doing that.
