Cycling World Record: Victor Campenaerts' World Hour Record - 55.089 km (34.231 mi)

I know this probably won't garner much discussion here, but a new cycling world record was set today at the Aguascalientes indoor velodrome in Mexico. Victor Campenaerts beat Bradley Wiggins' Hour Record mark of 54.526 km (33.881 miles), setting the new record at 55.089 km (34.231 miles).
This record is incredibly difficult to attempt. The general nature is: get on a velodrome (cycling track) on a fixed-gear bike (no coasting), and pedal as hard as you dare for one hour. When the hour is up, the governing body calculates how far you've gone. The nature of riding a fixed gear bike on a circular track in an aerodynamic position while riding at your physiological limit for an hour is just absolutely brutal.
ETA: For you cycling-fluent folks, the dude rode a 60-14 gear.

I watched some of this live on cycling weekly. He had his aerobars made from a mold of his forearms - pretty cool

Even though Wiggins said he hope this would happen...anything that takes something from Bradley is ok with me. Very accomplished track guy climbing the alps and leaving behind mountain goats while being pull along by jet fuel Froome was disgusting...

I went to the UCI World Championships in Richmond, VA in 2015. Trek had Jens Voigt's track bike that he used for his Hour Record on display. It was fricking awesome.

Going 34 MPH doesn't seem too astonishing.
Are indoor cyclists the ones who couldn't make it as road cyclists?

What am I missing?
He rode for 1 hr and went 34 miles and change.

He went 34 mind-numbing, hard-as-frick, miles. In an hour. To do so, he had to put out something like 450 Watts. At altitude. On a fixed gear bike. For a solid hour. Round and round a track. Slight variations in speed every damn turn killing his legs. Without cracking mentally or physically for a second.

Good for him.
Still sounds boring.

I am not a cycling enthusiast, but that is an incredible display of endurance, stamina, and discipline.
That I would never even remotely attempt.

Wow, that is close to a 53-12 and he is holding that gear at a cadence of about 100 for an HOUR!
That’s INSANE!

I had to google to try and better understand the gear ratio nomenclature.

Just saw a video on how hard this is. Impressive!

It’s basically getting on a road bike get in the big front ring and the smallest rear cog and pedal at 100 rpms for an hour.

440W for an hour is just incomprehensible to me. My best 40K TT was 56:00 at 292W. And I was absolutely toast when I crossed the line. I know it’s stupid to even compare, but it’s just so difficult to imagine 150W more being humanly possible.
I’d have to go back and look at my old power files, but even when I was in the best shape of my life, I doubt I’ve ever held 440W for two minutes. My beat ever 5-minute power was like 380W and that was one singular short TT when I was completely rested.
Anyway. It is just mind boggling to think about the physiological capabilities of the world-class athletes compared to schmoes like us.
