Baseball mid season stock report

Taking stock of general summaries before diving deep into specifics.
The good:
-LSU has played the hardest schedule out of the west teams thus far and has the easiest remaining schedule in the division based on current records.
-Despite having two weekend rotation starters from opening day pitch 0 innings of SEC play LSU is only 1 game out of first place in the SEC West.
-LSU is winning close games, they are 8-2 in one run games.
-The bullpen outside of a few instances has been very good and Mainieri is learning to let the hot arm go for 2-3 innings to close out a game if needed.
The bad:
-Arm injuries have absolutely killed any type of momentum LSU is able to keep from week to week on the mound. The weekday starters have been in complete fluctuation throughout the year as they are trying to piece together week by week.
-The hitting game has shown no signs of consistency and it's starting from what many think are LSU's two best hitters. I have not been a fan at all of the hitting approach thus far meaning there is little to no approach at all being shown in specific instances.
-The bottom of LSU's lineup has gotten to a point where its no longer a couple of easy outs but an entire easy inning where the opposing pitcher has time to calm down so to speak.
Now some general thoughts on why I think LSU is struggling and what they can do to fix them. Please share yours as well.
1. Duplantis and Cabrera have not been hitting the ball to the opposite field with regularity. Both are on pace to greatly exceed their strikeout totals from 2018. Both are taking homerun hacks on two strike pitches with men on base.
Fix - They know they don't need to be jumping out of their shoes on every swing but they're still maturing, coaching needs to step up here.
2. Garza and Bianco combined have 85 plate appearances and have struck out 31 times. That means they are striking out a little less than every other time they step to the plate which is an ugly stat.
Fix - There's not a lot you can do to fix at this point, Ochinko's approach for certain hitters has been to swing early but we've seen LSU run themselves out of some quick innings this way. Also at this point I feel much better with CJ Willis going up against a lefty than any of these options.
3. Jaden Hill has not played since week two. Nick Storz is just starting to get into regular bullpens.
Fix - Hope he can get back as soon as possible. Mainieri does a good job of protecting arms but at some point they need to let Jaden increase his work load. Having Storz back by the end of April as a setup piece would be very nice.
4. Playing at Missouri
Fix - Hope to not play there for a very very long time. I don't know if LSU will see any of Hess, Watson, or Reid this weekend...(maybe Reid) so it's going to be another piece together weekend.

All great thoughts as always Adam.
That said, this thread will be a shite show of unintelligible and uninformed opinions

A little patience at the plate goes a long way IMO
Willis is going to be huge for LSU, maybe not until next season but I think he has what it takes to be special
ETA
I know Mathis has been pretty terrible at the plate but he has done his share behind the plate with little to no breaks

He's a defensive role player holding down his own, I've actually been proud of how he hasn't given up although being limited in areas.

How many doubleheaders has Mathis had to catch this season?
Also, looking ahead he may need to do it yet again this weekend.

Was talking to a friend this morning and mentioned curiosity about mid-SEC batting averages for the returning players in 2019 vs. 2018. Surely, Duplantis is down and Reid is up. Not sure where Cabrera, Broussard, and Watson rank as opposed to a year ago.

I think Mathis will be fine next year.
It's hard to be a first year catcher at LSU.
I just hope the coaches don't push him out only to have to start from scratch again for the 3rd straight year.
Having Mathis back next season along with a freshman to share time with will help the pitchers, Mathis, and the next guy to take over after him.
ETA: I mean most of this from a hitting standpoint.

Watson and Reid are up.
Broussard is hard to track because most of his average last year was purely before SEC play and once back became a 0.200 hitter.
Cabrera had a miserable beginning last year but started to heat up with the weather.

More
AM | #LSU will be without Hal Hughes for "at least a week," according to Paul Mainieri.
Hughes hurt his thumb diving back into second base during the series finale against Missouri, leaving LSU with 11 healthy position players

Adam, well thought out OP! But you left out some critical points such as the base running errors, and the lack of a defense which helps pitching. These seem correctable, yet they remain mid season. Since you seem all baseball wise, is it that LSU doesn’t have the athletes or is it the coaching?

Conclusion:
Too many LH hitters.
No LH pitchers
Too many LH hitters.
No LH pitchers

base running errors
I agree there have been some careless base running errors at times.

LSU's 6th in SEC play in fielding percentage and is at .978%. It's not a flaw as you're trying to point out.

The lack of leadership/coaching/voice at the plate is glaring. This team hits as Duplantis hits, they feed off his at-bats. Thats entirely unfair for a group of kids to take their lead from an outfielder. I Agree, there is NO calculated approach at the plate, that coincides with no clear consistent voice of reason from a figure of authority in the dugout.

Impossible. But yea...but maybe the left handed bats are the only ones hitting right now.
Luckily LSU is done playing the three most dominant left handed teams in the SEC back to back to back and will see way more righties down the stretch.

When I say “know” Russ, I know their tendencies, that is all.

At least three off the top of my head (Cal, A&M and Kentucky)

Are they done giving Garza a shot behind the plate or is he still injured? I know there was a ton of preseason hype surrounding his bat, but obviously he never showed that in the DH role.
