Too many recessed lights?

I'm building a man cave/outdoor kitchen right now. Doing the work myself. I'm installing recessed lights for general ambient lighting and am trying to figure out if I'll have too many.
The room is 14x20' with 8' ceiling and consists of kitchen and small living area. I currently have 11 6"can lights laid out 4' apart from each other and 3'from the walls. 9 of them are in the kitchen area and 2 are over where the sofa will be. Is that too many? I thought about reducing the number of lights but not sure how I can lay them out without have some dim areas. I want plenty light but not overpowering. I am planning on putting dimmers to control the brightness.
Does this sound like too many lights?

Positioning of recessed lights is like a sprinkler system.
Find out where the outter edges are of your lights are and space them accordingly.
Similar to this:
You want a bit of overlap and you certainly don't want your whole ceiling to be one huge light

I've got nine in my kitchen, as I like LOTS of light. They're on a dimmer, though: this allows me to dial things down when I want.

How many lumens are the cans? i'll run a quick calc.
ETA: 600 lumen can, qty of 12 spaced evenly is about 15 footcandle, which is plenty in my opinion.

A lot of the manufacturers will tell you the coverage at different heights on their websites
