The Average Salary by Age

quote:

Many Americans are unemployed or under-employed – working part-time when they would prefer to be working full-time – so take these BLS stats on average salary with a grain of salt because they only apply to full-time wage- or salary-earners. Within each age bracket, earnings vary widely by gender, race and education level, too. Some people also get income from sources other than salary and wage earnings – sources like investment income.

Well it says right there in the stipulations that it only applies to full time workers, so I assume there is a minimum work week hours minimum. That 16-19 salary is basically a 40 hour a week job at 11 bucks an hour. You can make more waiting tables. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

Maybe if you’re an 18 year old enlisted in the military?

I agree with everything here minus the line of "want to be a full time employee." These people want to off time and not have to grind.

This one will probably feel a little more believable. It's "middle income" by state and by household size (interactive so you can't grab an image url)

LINK

range displayed for each state is between 2/3 median to double the median, which is pew's definition of middle income.

eyeballing louisiana for a 4-person household, 50th percentile looks to be something like 75-78K
