The Palmetto Inn on Morninghill is beautiful.

Go to Jake’s on Devine. Find one or the bartenders and say to them, “Hot banana bitches.” They’ll know what it means.
You’ll meet Gary. Gary will hook you up.

I’m a Hilton guy, so I would say the Hampton Downtown - Historic District. $ will depend on when you’re going. Tru by Hilton is also a decent option. Newer properties.

The Vendue in Charleston. Every time I go to Columbia I stay in Charleston and commute. Might as well make a nice vacation out of it.

Hotel Trundle is a relatively new place in the Main St district that a couple of my friends loved. Independent, locally owned place. Easy walking distance to plenty of good restaurants and bars.
There’s also the Hilton, Hampton, and Aloft in the Vista area, as well as the Sheraton on Main.
If you’re coming to town for a military thing I assume you will be near Fort Jackson, but there isn’t really a hotel I would recommend right by there.
If you want some recs for stuff to do to avoid being around a baby, let me know what you’re looking for and I’ll be glad to throw out some ideas.

Fort Jackson. One of the WW2 barracks.

Ask for the USC athlete rate at the Whitney Hotel

The Inn at USC is nice and in a safe area (USC campus, obviously). It is a Wyndham hotel.
There is a Hilton and Hampton Inn downtown in the Vista if you want to be around restaurants and bars.
I wouldn't stay at any hotels next to the fort. The areas immediately around Ft. Jackson are "meh".

I stayed at the Marriott by SC campus. Close to a few restaurants and you get to see the coeds strolling by all day.
ETA: there was also a thread on the food board with food recs. The good thing is you're not going this week. hotel prices are ridiculous during masters.

The Springhill Suites on Lady Street. Close to some decent places the eat and grab a drink. Stayed there when my son went to USC. Can’t really think of a negative and I am a lifetime Marriott whatever they call it now member.

Hampton Inn in the Vista or the Inn at USC.
